MODS - NOT LOOKING FOR MEDICAL ADVISE!!!

I have been to my consultant yesterday and she sent me for yet more tests! As the appointment came to a close she asked me if I was experiencing any mood swings - which I have been I explained that I was getting quite teary when I saw sad things on the news and that I had been feeling down.

The doctor then whipped out her prescription pad and gave me a prescription for 40mg of prozac (Fluoxatine) and told me to take it daily for 3 months - if the dose wasnt right I can make in appointm, ent in 1 month.

I didnt have a psych evaluation she didnt ask any other questions nor did I embelish any more than as above and yet I have a prescription for prozac??

Should I rip it up?? Does this not seem a little weird!

Jay

YES…YES…YES…
Get a second opinion on this one. Sounds like you are sensitive person perhaps with cyclic hormones which is part of the natural process…not an illness that has to have pills as a chaser.

Rip up the prescription or at least ask more questions.

Actually, for PMDD prozac or other anti-depressant in the same class has been shown to work but, this is a bit quick to go that route.

I agree about getting a second opinion.

This is very true. My friend’s daughter had very emotional mood swings the week before her period. She was extreme though…sobbing all the time. She was given Prozac to help her through this and it was successful.

There is usually an underlying reason as to why a woman is more emotional during these peak surges of hormones. It is not usually just a result of hormones. Don’t get me wrong, I know I tend to be a little more sensitive during this time. For instance, my friend’s daughter became so emotional the week before her period when she went off to college. She was under a lot of stress during that time…away from home, trying to balance college with a job…etc…Once she got her life together and the stresses abated, her symptoms went away.

Like the others, I would get a second opinion. If you feel comfortable, go to a psychiatrist or a psychologist(one who has a license to prescribe meds) to help you determine the causes of WHY you are more emotional. There is an underlying reason, and these doctors will help you find it, and will help you find ways to either cope with it or prescribe a medication to help you along.

May you find healing and peace!

Wow, that was an awfully casual way to hand out some pretty heavy-duty meds! No wonder you’re nervous!

This is just in agreement with the others: do get a second opinion.

Good for you for being proactive instead of passive about your health–that’s very important!!

Best of luck! 🙂

True story.

I had a neighbor that started takin prozac and suddenly he didn’t care about nuttin! He use to holler at his kids, twist into preztel if a dog got in his yard, he once went off on a neighbor’s boy for bouncing his basketball a night. Lights were on in his study at 2am.

He was taking the trash to street one morning, missed the truck, then just slung the bag down the driveway. He beat his lawn mower with a golf club one Saturday when it wouldn’t crank.

He use to get all fired up if a kid came by with thumping loud music, even once jumping in his SUV to chase him down to get the plate number. He was awesome.

Now he just sits on the porch and rocks. Nothing bothers him. All lights at his house are off by 9pm.

My study faces the street, I always have the blinds open so I can see out (I can’t stand not being able to see out, drawn blinds or curtains drive me crazy) I use to sit here and watch all his sheniangans, but now he’s as docile as a cow.

None of the neighborhood kids trick or treated his house. Every year his wife would tell me, “I bought all this candy and nobody ever shows up.” “Do you have those bite size Baby Ruths left over?” “Yeah.” “Well I’ll take them.” (true exchange)

One night I was in my study and I saw Tom rocking on his porch in kinda of trance. I called to Debbie-

“hey baby, cmere and look at Tom, sumptin’s not right with that joker”

She came in and looked at the window.

“Marueen said they put Tom on Prozac”

“How’s she know?”

“She drinks coffee with Tom’s wife every morning”

“Dang, I thought they’d done performed a lobotomy on him”

“yeah he’s a lot different”

“yeah, I kinda want the old Tom back, he was some free entertainment”

So the moral is I don’t trust prozac.

Also, I think a lot of UK GPs have this prescription pad cure. I have spent literally seconds in a doctor’s office-they will give you a prescription and get on with the next customer.

Great story but the moral I come away with is he was taking too much prozac or he needed a different drug in the same class.

Just so you all know it is not an evil drug, just one that needs to be used judiciously and with frequent trips to the Dr.
