Hi,

Even if the Church sets a limit to something, can we still be bound in the virtue of prudence to follow something in the Church traditions/private revelations?

For example, though the Church says Our Lady of Fatima is private revelation, are we still bound in prudence to believe since there were so many approvals from the Church, and because of the miracles that were predicted beforehand?

This phrase makes no sense.

No. Prudence doesn’t “bind” us to believe anything,
Thank you for the response. I’m concerned because I heard a talk by a famous priest who said that those who don’t believe in Fatima are sinning against the virtue of prudence

CCC 67 - Throughout the ages, there have been so-called “private” revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however, to the deposit of faith. It is not their role to improve or complete Christ’s definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history. Guided by the Magisterium of the Church, the sensus fidelium knows how to discern and welcome in these revelations whatever constitutes an authentic call of Christ or his saints to the Church.

And who was this priest? If it’s the one whose faculties were suspended, I ask why you would take his comment over what the Church teaches???

Hi,

I don’t think his faculties are suspended. If I knew his faculties were suspended, I wouldn’t have been concerned. I don’t want to take what he says above the Church teachings, otherwise I wouldn’t have been willing to ask this question.

His name is Fr. Isaac Mary Relyea, who says he’s indeed loyal to the Pope. He’s a pretty good preacher, and I thought he was pretty orthodox, but he says some things that seem questionable, and would like to know if what he was saying is orthodox

All the best

Okay. I was concerned it was a certain priest who died in the past year with a history of his priestly faculties being suspended. Since Fr Relyea seems to have a social media presence, you might want to contact him and ask him to clarify what he meant in that talk. I am not familiar with this priest, but if his talks are quite passionate about his topic, he could have being saying it to emphasize the importance of believing and following the Fatima message without actually meaning one is sinning. Of course, you can also bring this up with your regular confessor and see what he advises, although a previous poster already referenced the Catechism on it.

It is true that we do not have to accept private revelation. It is also true that those who desire to learn about the message and read about it can be helped quite a bit.

In my case, I learned about Our Lady of Fatima as a teen, and due to that I learned to pray the rosary a lot, and from there I was attracted to know more about my faith. It was very beneficial and inspiring to me.

Ordination is not a guarantee that the individual follows the Magisterium to a tee. Some have been lax in following it; some have been rigorous where the Magisterium is not; and some have gone where the Magisterium has not gone.
