While reading “Imitation of Christ” by Thomas a Kempis (translation by Challoner), I’ve come across a scripture passage I just can’t find. On page 8 (Chapter 3), we find this: “Happy is he whom Truth teacheth by itself, not by figures and words that pass, but as it is in itself”. (Ps. 17:36, Is 28:26).
My problem is, I can’t find Ps. 17:36 in any of the translations of the bible that I own (D-R, RSV-CE, NAB, NIV, NAS, CCB, or KJV… call me a bible collector LOL). I understand that Psalms is one of those places where various versions get confusing due to verse/chapter numbering, etc. Anyway, can any of you savvy Bible Scholars point me to a Psalm that refers to the above quotation? Thanks bunches.

Psalm 17:36 in the Douay-Rheims Bible (Psalm 18:36 in newer translations) reads:

36 And thou hast given me the protection of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath held me up: And thy discipline hath corrected me unto the end: and thy discipline, the same shall teach me.

Isaiah 28:26 in the Douay-Rheims Bible reads:26 For he will instruct him in judgment: his God will teach him.

This also might be an allusion to John 16:29 which the Revised Standard Version has as:
29His disciples said [to Jesus, who is Truth incarnate], "Ah, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure!

In my copy of Kempis the note reads that it is psalm 94:12 which reads: “Blessed is the man whom thou shalt instruct, O Lord: and shalt teach him out of thy law.” Psalm 94:12 Douay-Rhiems

##Isa 28:26For his God doth instruct him to discretion, [and] doth teach him.

The text quoted looks like a composite quotation, not taken from one verse alone ##

Sorry, I should have been more clear. the “Happy…” quote is the translation of Challoner’s of Thomas a Kempis’ writings, it then references Ps 17:36.
Also, Malachai4U: Definitely a Catholic Classic.
