I am a recent convert to Roman Catholicism. Does the Roman Catholic faith have any guidelines regarding the use of psychiatric medications such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs? Thank you for your help.

None that I know of.

They are treated as any other medication. If used properly I don’t think the Church has any objections to them, any more than the Church would have particular guidelines with respect to antibiotics.

I don’t know. I can say people misunderstand mental illness and believe it’s something one can “snap out of”, so that is whysome people view them as a cop out or bad thing. However they DO help people in most cases.

Psychiatric medications are used to treat illnesses just as other drugs are used to treat various physical diseases. For example, Major Depression is a very real illness and treatment with an antidepressant prescribed by a doctor is quite appropriate. The same is true for anti-anxiety medications used to use anxiety disorders. If a doctor prescribes medication for an illness and the patient takes the medication as prescribed, there is no problem.
Drug abuse or misuse is wrong. Do not change a dose or take more than the prescribed amount unless you check with your doctor.

I agree with the other posters. Psychiatric drugs are, when used properly, a very helpful tool in treating various illnesses. I am personally very thankful for a particular antidepressant that very quickly pulled me out of a major postpartum depression. I thank God for the advances in medicine today.

No problem at all.
I use them and know of many others who do to.
I checked when I started on them to make sure there was no problem with the church and there isn’t.

When used to treat a physiological/psychological problem, no prob. When used in leu of spiritual/psychological counseling to treat a behavior/psychological problem, then although it may be moraly licit, they will never be a solution.
