As a product of public schools (I atttended Catholic school grades k-2) and graduated from a public university. I am now a public school special education teacher. I have been asked several times by one of our priests why I don’t teach in our local Catholic school and I continue to reply that Catholic schools do not teach children with special needs and that is what I felt called to do as my other vocation (other than a wife and mother).

I do volunteer my time to teach CCD to 6th graders at our parish in addition to having a scheduled hour of Adoration every week (we have Perpetual Adoration at our church), I am also a reader and an EMHC at the church. I have 3 boys who attend our local public schools where every classroom has the sign “In GOD We Trust” in every room of the schools. My middle son, who talks about discerning a vocation to the priesthood, has stood with his classmates around the flagpole at school and prayed on Friday mornings. Yes, all this without going to Catholic school. A lot of the children who attend our local Catholic school do not always attend Sunday Mass with their families (because, and I quote- from the parents-“they already attended Mass at school this week”) No sex ed is taught and I feel good about the education that my boys are receiving where none of their classes have more than 25 students (no more than 18 in my younger son’s classes).

My husband who is also a public school teacher graduated from a Catholic high school and comes to Mass with the boys and me out of “wife” guilt on most Sundays. He is always saying “can’t we skip Mass this week?”
So to make blanket statements that only children who go to Catholic schools or who are homeschooled grow up to be good Catholics is not true. Faith begins at HOME in a loving and supportive environment. Schooling for your children should be a choice and no one should be put down for the choices that they make for their children. Some public schools are great as are some Catholic schools and bless those who are able to teach their own children at home with all the love and guidance that they can.👍

Amen Mom to 3,

It is good to see those who have a broader experience and not just a one sided one. Thank goodness God has the Best picture of all that goes on down here? yep 🙂

Anway, take care and have a good one,
