I’m sure people here have heard of Bishop Thomas Olmstead and how he stripped St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix of its Catholic status and excommunicated Sister Margaret McBride for approving an abortion on a woman suffering from pulmonary hypertension who allegedly would have died if she were to continue the pregnancy.
Here’s an article from ABC about the case:
abcnews.go.com/Health/abortion-debate-hospital-stripped-catholic-status/story?id=12455295
It’s pretty clear the article is pretty biased, as can be seen by the quote from Dr. Jacques Moritz degrading priests, and the completely random mention of pedophile priests. But is there more to the story that this article isn’t reporting? Can someone give me a solid source that details more of what exactly happened, particularly from Bishop Olmstead’s point of view? Because if this ABC article is true, this does give pro-choicers some seriously heavy-duty ammo against the pro-life movement and the Catholic Church.
In fact, what should be done in the case of a woman suffering from pulmonary hypertension during a pregnancy in which it is threatening her life? If it is clear that if the pregnancy is not aborted, she will die, what does the Church say should be done? I’m 100% pro-life, but in this case it seems this would be one of those very rare exceptions in which abortion would be justified; especially if there’s no chance to save the fetus anyway.
