I heard that purgatory is no more after the final judgement. If this is true, do those people who are judged good while still being alive have free direct pass to Heaven?
I have wondered about this myself. I would presume no, not entirely. If we are to assume that most souls that die in the friendship of God must be purified before they enter heaven, it’s only rational that those after the final judgement will need to be purified. This of course assumes that the final judgement itself is not part of a purification process.I heard that purgatory is no more after the final judgement. If this is true, do those people who are judged good while still being alive have free direct pass to Heaven?
Remember the Scripture of the workers in the field those who were hired last were paid the same amount as those who had worked all day. One can suffer temporal punishment while still alive.I heard that purgatory is no more after the final judgement. If this is true, do those people who are judged good while still being alive have free direct pass to Heaven?
I think this is a strong and valid point. The probability that God’s people will be refined and holy during this period is great; however, that doesn’t necessarily mean they will be perfected. My guess is that this would account for the majority of the purgation though. I suspect most people will need more in order to get into heaven. There is also the matter of surviving the tribulation period. It will take a certain caliber of person to survive this. A certain level of purgation will occur and purity and uncommon devotion to the Lord will be the key to survival. ?
Dear Ginger,1Cr 6:11 says, " …but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."
So, do you think the blood of Christ did all this, but left out purification?
Do you really think that we can somehow pay for the evil we do here on Earth or in purgatory.
Once you are in purgatory how does one paid his debt? Forget that last penny. How do you even pay the first penny once you leave the physical world?
Is this what the Church officially teaches?Hi christcnection,
it’s only rational that those after the final judgement will need to be purified
Purgatory is not a place and is not something that happens in time. Those who will be alive when the end of the world comes, will be transformed “in the twinkling of an eye”. God, who forgives our sin in baptism, without confession, can judge us and cleanse our soul “in the twinkling of an eye”
Whoops, I guess we missed that one for 1500 years.1Cr 6:11 says, " …but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."
This is true, indeed. “Our” time (and any time, actually,) is also creation. Time exists within created material system; it is strictly bind, connected to mass and energy. But God is a Spirit. Talking about what will be after time and after final judgment is superfluous. We may be misled to talking about thing, we cannot understand. Besides, theologians say that final judgment is possibly taking place at the moment of a person death. Quite logical, isnt it? Love and peace.Purgatory is not a place and is not something that happens in time.

QUOTE]
That’s a good quote. I’ll have to remember it. Luther taught that justification was a legal thing, what theologians call forensic justic.
According to Luther, Christ’s salvific death on the Cross for us and his Resurrection was not enough to wash away our sins. It only covered them over. Kind of like a gentle snow on a pile of manure. The stench and the cause of it were still there, except God didn’t see it. Poor God. Such poor vision he had.
No, our sins are washed away by the merits of Jesus Christ, once for all. We however have the penalties after the sins are forgiven. We know that in the early Church, even in the O.T. in Maccabees, 'it was a good and precious thing to pray for the dead". They have gone to eternity, but they need our prayers for the sins and offenses, though forgiven, still have attached to them the penalty, or punishment. Just like we do on planet Earth. Men go prison for their offenses, until society receives ‘payment’ for their crimes.

How could you possibly believe I disagree? Nothing I said contradicts your truth-filled point. Ultimately, it’s not for me to determine.Nobody deserves to go to heaven, no matter what they go through. Salvation is a free gift that we cannot deserve. God the All-Just owes us nothing and he decides what is fair in His eyes.
Verbum
We must remember that when the world comes to an end, so will purgatory. All those in purgatory until that final hour will have completed their purification and satisfied their debt of punishment. One might ask a hypothetical question: what if one dies very shortly before the end of the world in the state of grace, but with a considerable debt of temporal punishment and attachment to creatures. Is that debt paid and the purification accomplished in so short a time? St. Thomas asks the same question with regard to those who are still living at the end of the world, and the answer he gives covers both situations. As we stated, he holds that all those still living the last day will be consumed in that fire.
“There are three reasons why those who will be found living will be able to be cleansed suddenly. One is because there will be few things in them to be cleansed , since they will be already cleansed by the previous fears and persecutions. The second is because they will suffer pain in this life of their own will, and pain suffered in this life voluntarily cleanses much more than pain inflicted after death . . . .The third is because suffering can increase in intensity to make up for shortness of time.” (Suppl. 74,8, ad 5). (This third reason would answer the question regarding souls in purgatory.)

Yes, at the final judgement is it the end of time, but purgatory is an extension of heaven, is in not? All those who are in purgatory will go to heaven without exception. If they are not ready in their soul to be admitted into the unimaginable, glorious, perfection of the Lord in His eternal kingdom, additional purification must take place.Isn’t the Final Judgement considered to be the end of time? Then, after time, everyone should be in their eternal state, Heaven or Hell. I don’t believe there will be any one in Purgatory after the end of time.
Agreed. It is Christ Jesus who has made us pure. All the good deeds in the world could not make me worthy. It is Christ Jesus who has justified me.Dear Ginger,
We will not enter heaven without being completely pure.
