It is implied in this question that faith cannot save him, for very often the most emphatic way of making an affirmation is by asking a question. The meaning here is, that that faith which does not produce good works, or which would not produce holy living if fairly acted out, will save no man, for it is not genuine faith. (Barnes)

Rom 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Are we not sealed unto the day of redemption by the Holy Spirit?
No man can pluck us from Jesus’ or the Father’s hand?
Numerous verses that say we have Eternal Life.
We can know we are saved, we are a Temple of the Holy Spirit.

Once saved it becomes a Father-Child relationship, where we can damage the relationship, but never break it totally.

We are bought with a price and when we come to know hm and his love, we will not leave him, we can fail bur never break the bond.

I understand what you are saying, you basically just reiterated it. However, you have not actually dealt with any of my main points, you merely re-asserted the same thing. I’m actually less interested in your ideas on eternal security at this moment than in how you would respond to the problems stated about the implications of “saving faith.” Then we can move to eternal security.

*As an addendum, please do not mistake my terse tone for harshness. God Bless.

You address faith as not measureable or is it good enough?
Faith is believing that when I die, I am going to heaven. Simple. Faith, becasue it all rests on the promises. I lean not on my own understanding, but lean on him.
Code:
God said it, that settles it for me. Since he is in the saving business, I leave it up to him.

If you tell a relative they can move in with you and you'll cover all expeenses (Grace-free gift) your word settled it. Yes, there is planning, packing and moving, but it is great the deal is already made.
BTW, faith has been called perfect in the Bible. Jas 2:22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

You get so technical, just have faith.

Ahem… sorry, but that is a cop-out. You are taking what you want to see/read and ignoring all else. Let me do the same for you:

“Salvation is not by faith”. There. God said it, so I believe it. So faith has nothing to do with salvation.

Granted, I take pedantic arguments like this to extremes, but the point is valid.

I will not wade into this too deeply, since it has been covered in depth already, but please, avoid cop-outs. And feel free to call me on them as you see fit 😃

Trusting the words of God is not a cop out.
Is God contradicting himself?
Some things may not be fully understood. That is why it is faith.

Faith is believing that when I die, I am going to heaven. Simple. Faith, becasue it all rests on the promises. I lean not on my own understanding, but lean on him. **RESPONSE: Actually I covered quite a bit more than that. Your idea of faith as mental assent is unbiblical as well, and you have shown remarkably little Biblical support within context to defend your assertions. **

BTW, faith has been called perfect in the Bible. Jas 2:22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
You get so technical, just have faith. **RESPONSE: Your own verse destroys your argument. Notice how the verse does NOT say “that your faith IS perfect because of works.” Rather, the faith is already there, present in the believers, and it is MADE perfect by the works. I have dealt with these arguments adequately already and you have yet to respond to them. Let’s look at more of this in context:

James 2:21-24:“Was not our ancestor Abraham justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works. Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says: ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,’ and he was called the friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.”

It goes on but I’m sure you get the idea. Notice that Abraham had faith, but he was tested by sacrificing Isaac. He could have failed that test. The good works don’t naturally pop out. This is an indepth subject and I could go on for days on this passage alone, but suffice it to say that it in no way supports your statement.

Considering that your definition of faith is mental assent and not as the Bible would define it, I can’t take your statement very seriously. You want to get simple? The people asked Peter what they must DO to be saved, and this is after Peter preached the gospel to them. What did he say? “REPENT AND BE BAPTIZED.” Doesn’t get much simpler than that. This seems to be unproductive, however, since when I attempt to show the dangerous beliefs your theology can lead to when the implications are fully explored, you tend to back out and not really respond to anything. **

I’ll continue to trust Jesus’ words. You strain at gnats and split hairs. I have no problem with repent and be baptised. But you are ignoring the simple numerous other verses.

Thanks for the dialog.

MariaG,

Thanks for the reply. We say faith only because there are Bible verses that say that.
i.e Eph 2:8-9. and numerous verses in Romans. Plus word searh saved in John and you will find out that faith guarantees salvation. Repentance is not even mentioned, but it is part of the equation like works. Faith turns the key.
Respectfully, the only place in scripture that talks about faith alone is in James where is specifically says we are NOT saved by faith alone.

I would be happy to be corrected if you would like to quote where in the Bible it tells us we are saved by faith alone, since you claim that scripture says that.
James showed that real faith had works. They are inseparable. But faith comes first and then works. Works means we are going about oir Father’s business, his will.
So works will be there.
We are saved by Grace alone. And faith is intertwined and inseparable from works.
In reference to Luther, what he read in the Bible was not be practiced in the CC. In some cases salvation was being sold. And he saw works as being part of people’s salvation. All he did was point to the verses, which show the Blood of the Lamb cleanses us from all unrighteousness.
And God was working mighty miracles within His Church trying to bring about a revival. And if he pointed out that works are part of people’s salvation, why the “Faith Alone”? He either was trying to change the accepted definition of Faith, or ???

And the Church has always taught about the saving grace of Christ’s blood. That was nothing new.
The beauty of faith only is that it shows that 100% of our salvation comes from Jesus and we do nothing to attain it. We will have many and great works, but they cannot replace the Blood.
The Catholic Church has always taught that our salvation comes 100% from Christ and there is nothing we can do that will earn us heaven. This was reiterated at Trent.

The Catholic Church has never officially taught that works will replace the blood of Christ. Never.

And again, I would love for you to quote scripture that tells about Faith alone.

While I can say that I believe the way you define Faith alone is the same way the Catholic CHurch defines Faith + Hope + Charity, I would ask again where in scripture we see faith and alone together in scripture.
In summary, faith (is belief), and it results in repentance, baptism, Spirit baptism, remiision of sins and works. Faith comes first.
Yes, faith is first, but even by your own list, it is not Alone. If you have faith, without repentance, you are not saved. Faith without any of it, and you have faith alone and a short trip to hell.

Although I believe it would be more proper to say it is GRACE that is first.
This thread picked up because of purgetory. You can know you are saved now. 1 Jn 5:13. Eternity starts when we believe. Note, saved is past tense. We see the gospel as simple. we are not worthy before we are saved, and never will be worthy. Christ died for all of our sins almost 2000 years before we were born.

Rom 8:1 There is no condemnation for those in Christ.
John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

There are soooo many current tense promises, it all starts with faith.
John
The Catholic Church believes that one CAN be confident in ones salvation. Purgatory is simply a process in which we are completely cleansed from all sin and desire to sin before standing before Our Lord.

I won’t get into all the rest, because this is already so far from purgatory.

But again, show me anywhere in scripture where it is Faith ALONE.

Respectfully,
Maria

1Co 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

The word is powerful, it spoke heaven and earth into existence, it spoke and healed the sick, it became flesh (Jesus) and dwelt among us. I do not think God will have a problem getting us ready. It takes longer to get through purgatory than creation itself.

You can be washed in the Blood now. When we go to heaven, we will be found not guilty by the Blood.
Purgatory may be an instantaneous process.

And it is simple, we will no longer not only be declared “not guilty” but we will also have no desire to sin once united with Him.

This is what we have named purgatory.

Unless you think you are the perfected being now? You have no desire to sin now? Or you think you will desire to sin in heaven? If not, what changes? We give it a name. Purgatory.

You are right. Keep it simple. What the the Bible say about Faith alone?

(Hint: see James)

Unless I missed it. You claimed that scripture talks of faith alone. I only know of one place where those two words are linked and it says we are NOT saved by faith alone.

Which means that maybe, just maybe, your definition of Faith might not be scriptural.

God Bless,
Maria

Thanks for the dialog **RESPONSE: Unfortunately, you do not seem to understand what Jesus means. This is what happens when you are separated from 2,000 years of history and attempt to impose your pastor’s viewpoint on the text. You gave me a few scattered verses, I dealt with them in a timely fashion, and then you never seem to have a response except that I’m getting too technical. Neither you nor the other Protestant that was here seemed able to explain the very clear passages in Acts regarding Paul’s baptism. You have attempted to “wave it all away” but I won’t let you do that. I don’t have to give you more verses just yet. You haven’t even really broken down those very few. I am not a fan of the shotgun approach to Scripture, I find it unhelpful. I’m beginning to see it may be necessary for you though, because when I really try to break Scripture down with you, you tend not to have any meaningful response.

You want to understand the nature of faith? Read up on Abraham and Rahab. That’s the kind of faith Paul and James are talking about, as well as the kinds of works. I can give you tons of other passages, but you are not able to deal with even a few on a meaningful level. Straining at gnats? Baptism is salvific. That’s not a gnat, that’s an issue of eternal salvation. Your theology can’t handle it, because it’s WRONG. It is SEPARATED from the historic teachings of Christ’s Church. It is internally INCONSISTENT. It DOESN’T stand up to SCRUTINY. Find one Christian in the first few centuries that believed otherwise as you do and show me the writing. Even if the Holy Spirit wasn’t with the Catholic Church, you would think that just from a common sense perspective I would take the earliest Christians opinions on baptism. To them, being baptized WAS being born again. If you won’t take their very clear quotations, we can continue to go from Scripture, but you’re going to need to actually deal with the problems, contradictions, and implications of your theology that I have already pointed out. You’re going to actually have to figure out why you believe, and maybe if what you believe is wrong. God Bless**

No God does not contradict Himself which is why He gave us a church with authority that can instruct us in the whole truth.

You are right some things might not be understood fully which is why He gave us His Church to help guide us in issues like this and has been guiding us in the faith (so we know what to believe and not what we ourselves want to believe) since the Apostles.

Here are some quotes I found that point the the fact purgatory exists.

**Mt 5:26 **– Come to terms with your opponent or you will be handed over to the judge and thrown into prison. You will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”

The word “opponents likely a reference to the devil (see the same word for devil in 1 Pet. 5:8) who is an accuser against man and God is the judge. If we have not adequately dealt with satan and sin in this life, we will be held in a temporary state called a prison, and we won’t get out until we have satisfied our entire debt to God. This “prison” is purgatory where we will not get out until the last penny is paid.

Heb. 12:23 - the spirits of just men who died in godliness are “made” perfect. They do not necessarily arrive perfect. They are made perfect after their death. But those in heaven are already perfect, and those in hell can no longer be made perfect. These spirits are in purgatory.

Phil. 2:10 - every knee bends to Jesus, in heaven, on earth, and “under the earth” which is the realm of the righteous dead, or purgatory. Since the people in hell no longer respect Jesus, they would not bow.

2 Tim. 1:16-18 - Onesiphorus is dead but Paul asks for mercy on him “on that day.”, there is no need for mercy in heaven, and there is no mercy given in hell. Where is Onesiphorus? He is in purgatory
