I want to know where in Scripture it says that there is a Purgatory. Need which book and which section.

It’s true the word ‘purgatory’ is not in the Bible. However, the words ‘Trinity’ and ‘Incarnation’ aren’t in the Bible, either, yet they are believed by most Christians.

Just like the doctrines of the Trinity and Incarnation, Scriptural evidence can be be shown for the doctrine of Purgatory. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:11-15-

For no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there, namely, Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious, stones, wood, hay or straw, the work of each will be come to light, for the Day will disclose it. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire [itself] will test the quality of each one’s work. If the work stands that someone built on the foundation, that person will receive a wage. But if someone’s work is burnt up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only as through fire.

kimmer, this question more appropriately belongs in the Apologetics section. Purgatory is alluded to, not explicitly mentioned, much like the Trinity, so there will be no book and verse.

Hello Kimmer,

I have never found anything even resembling purgatory in the bible and I have done a great amount of scriptural study of the bible.

Have you ever heard a priest give a homily on how Old Testament taught damnation and hell and Jesus now teaches love? This is a lie. It is really Jesus who teaches and warns of eternal punishment, damnation and the fires of Gehhena, not Old Testament. You really have to go out of your way to find anything in Old Testament which ressembles Jesus warnings of ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels’ and “eternal punishment” (Mathew 25:41)or “the evildoers shall rise to be damned” (John 5:27). Old Testament talks of spiritual life and spiritual death but it is New Testament Jesus and John the Baptist who lay down the teaching on eternal punishment, eternal fires of Gehenna and damnation.

I have often contemplated and prayed in hopes that Church leader teaching on “purgatory” was not simply an attempt by Church leaders to intentionally missinturpet Jesus clear warnings on eternal damnation.

WARNING! Jesus Does Not Forgive All

Warning people about eternal damnation is an infinitely far more important message to people taking the “path well traveled” than talking about “purgatory” where people alledgedly still go to heaven. Preaching Christ’s gospel of eternal damnation, on the other hand, seems to be presently out of favor.

It sounds like the Lord is chastising him before admitting him to Heaven.

Since this occurs in a passage on sin and degrees of sin, the magistrate appears to be by God.

This poll is confusing, I’m not sure what you mean by it. There is not an entire book of the Bible devoted to Purgatory, so I suppose the best answer is that it is found in a section of the Bible.

Purgatory is derrived from a latin word and not surprising it is not used in the NT. However what is purgatory and is the spiritual state mentioned in the Bible ? The answer is yes. The bible is loaded with examples of souls not being in hell of the damned but not being in heaven either. The bible also frequently speaks of nothing unclean will be admitted into heaven. Purgatory is that place where souls destined for heaven are cleansed of the remenats of impurities they have before entering heaven.
