I just looked it up, in addition to what Miss Lily says, apparently they were given when young couples were too poor to support a family, via the male’s inheritance, her dowry, or his earnings.
Why thank you dear…🙂

The idea behind the promise ring is for a boy to give a high school girl a tiny diamond ring to let everybody know that they are a couple in high school and in love and promise to be true to eachother. The hope is that they will grow up and graduate from high school and then college and then get the engagement ring when they are ready to marry.

It doesn’t always work out that way but it did work for my grand-daughter who met the love of her life in grade school and the friendship continued to high school and college. Then they got married.

They sell the promise rings at Wal-mart.lol.

For adult gals… they should ask a boyfriend for a friendship ring that can be any type of ring. The friendship ring is the first ring before the couple decides to marry. When that decision is made then the girl gets an engagement ring.

This is the way I see it for 2010 year and on up. If you gals think that the man you like MAY BE the one for you after dating for 6 months to one year… you should be assertive and ask for a friendship ring from your boyfriend. This way it gives the guy time to start thinking about an engagement in their future. Make it clear to the guy that it is a friendship ring and not an engagement ring. It shouldn’t cost much either unless the guy has lots of money and chooses an expensive friendship ring for you.

I have a guy friend who gave his girlfriend an expensive friendship diamond ring before giving her an engagement ring. He wanted to impress her. Some guys go over-board but that is okay with the gals.lol.

By the way… I made up this rule in 2008. Don’t bother doing any research on it.lol.

I want to add that some movie stars give each other plain silver rings that you can barely see because they are so thin. They look like washer rings from the faucets.lol. They are millionaires but they choose to show their love for eachother in that manner and if things don’t work out for them then they quietly break up. If the relationship lasts then they get engaged and then they get married.
This tradition was created by movie stars themselves since about 10 yrs.ago.

For high school kids it usually is a tiny diamond that you can barely see.

For adults it’s a smaller diamond before a bigger engagement diamond ring. I prefer the gem stone rings as a friendship ring. For example a friend guy bought me a opal ring.

If you give a gal a gem stone ring like a birthstone ring then it is not a serious relationship yet. But it can be like a purity ring.

So with which ring do they agree to get married (i.e. what I think of as ‘engagement’)? I’m British and think I may be missing a few things culturally.

I just wanted to encourage and send my prayers for all of you on this thread.
I had never even heard of Purity Rings in high school, but I think it’s a beautiful movement.

LIVE your LIFE filled with LOVE without the *distraction *of unchaste relationships and God will bless you immensely… 🙂

Good work!

I have noticed that people who are British like to buy engagement rings with a gem stone surrounded by diamonds. Princess Diana was given a large sapphire with diamonds as an engagement ring. The United States made a copy of it with fake stones. I have one.lol.

In America we gals prefer diamond rings. The size of the diamond doesn’t matter. It is the thought that counts.
Presently, the most popular diamond ring in America is called the princess cut diamond ring. It is a square cut diamond solitare. It doesn’t matter what size of diamond it is because all the young gals just love that type of diamond rings presently as an engagement ring.
Go to a diamond ring website and just look at them. I love looking at rings. I have a collection of rings.

My brown Scapular is the the external reminder to myself that my purpose is to live according to God’s Will, and purity certainly is apart of that.

Aside from that, the late Princess Di’s ring was spectacular:D This coming from someone who doesn’t own any real jewelry hahaha
