Purpose Driven Classes--Watch Out!

I hope this post doesn’t sound nasty.

I have been communicating with a person who is teaching a 40 Days of Purpose (Purpose Driven Life, by Rick Warren) class.

At first I honestly thought he was interested in including Catholics in the PDL teaching.

But I discovered that his real “purpose” is to “lead Catholics to Christ” and evangelize them so they will pray the “Sinner’s Prayer” and ask Jesus to come into their heart.

He actually said that Catholics are not Christians, and they are a vast mission field, ripe for evangelization.

I was really upset, and probably said more to him than I should. When I think of people like Father Maximillian Kolbe and other Catholics who have died for Christ, as well as many vibrant Catholic Christians who are still alive on this earth and living a very real faith and enjoying an intimate relationship with Jesus…

Anyway, it makes me mad just thinking about it!

So if you are planning to attend a Purpose Driven Life class, please study your Apologetics, bring your Bible, and be prepared to be “evangelized.”

Personally, I recommend skipping the PDL class.

I did read the book and thought it was good until I started listening to Catholic Radio where I heard the concerns about it mentioned.

I think a bigger problem is that fact that non Catholic Christians don’t think Catholics are Christian. I guess it angers me, but just think about it. If they think we aren’t saved, then it is very good of them to reach out to us. They are doing what they believe to be the right and moral thing to do.

I don’t know if anyone else encounters this situation. I don’t feel like I know enough to do battle with bible verses. It gets tricky. I do read the bible but I don’t have that talking points memorized that non Catholics use against us.

I really wish we could all be one. Just think how many of us there would be and how united we could stand. We would have a chance of changing things.

It would be nice if we were all one. But that went out the window with Luther. Protestants just about have to believe that catholics aren’t christian. Otherwise they couldn’t support their split from the church. And the catholic church has been lied about ever since Luther and his BS. It makes it easier for them.

I just wish we had a really popular book out now that’s similar. I know that we have really great theological and inspirational books out now, but I think we need more very light things for beginners and nominals. We also DEFINITELY need more Catholic fiction books. We need more modern (present-day) Catholic writers that aren’t afraid of writing Catholic stuff.

Otherwise they couldn’t support their split from the church. And the catholic church has been lied about ever since Luther and his BS. It makes it easier for them.

You seem to have a lot of hatred towards Martin Luther. You don’t seem to acknowledge Hus, Calvin, Zwingli, Savonarola, etc. Just ML, huh?

Look, there were disagreements all the way back to St Paul’s day. There was tension and dissention throughout church history. ML didn’t start it and it fact he never intended to break from Rome.

That being said, folks who insist you’re not Christian because you haven’t made a conscious decision to accept Jesus as your personal Saviour would also say that Lutherans fall into the same “non Christian” category, for the very same reasons.

Ease up on Martin Luther… that wasn’t very polite.

I was in a PDL small group that is now a very fruitful bible study. Wuith protestants! Like for real, the evil forces of this world want thier to be division among us, and the truth is that there are Catholics and Protestants alike who claim to be Christian but are not Christian at all.

in the book church history in plain language , by bruce shelly (a protestant) he talks about this same thing. how when the church was one catholic and apostolic church visible on earth, it was so effective it brought the greatest empire in the history of the world to it’s knees. imagine the affect it would have today.

p.s. incidentally, the book has a protestant slant to it. it is very good but there a few times when (even though it seems he tries very hard to be objective and fair) he makes comments against the catholics.

When I was in school we as Catholics were to remain fairly isolated and we were encouraged to be leary of other religions, but I was not taught that they weren’t Christians. I learned that we belonged to the one true chruch, but I wasn’t taught that they did not have a relationship with Jesus.

I was so very shocked when I was first married, moved to Oklahoma, and Protestants prayed over me and my husband because we were Catholic. I was actually shocked that people thought “we” were the ones who weren’t Christians.
