At my parish those people who take Holy Communion to people confined to the hospital, skilled nursing facilites or their homes have their pyxes filled with hosts.

Their pyxes then become part of the offering and they are placed on the altar with the rest of the gifts – sometimes up to perhaps 6-8 pyxes/Mass. The individuals then pick-up their pyxes after Mass which contain the Blessed Sacrament. (Said people are well trained in how to care for the Blessed Sacrament.)

This seems like a very powerful way to show a union with those unable to attend – better than just simply filling the pyxes after Mass. Is this common, or just a local custom?
