In 1 Timothy 4:13 St. Paul instructs Timothy to continue “public scripture reading” along with preaching, etc.

My question is what scripture would Timothy and the infant church publicly read. This isn’t a loaded question or anything, I’m just curious. Did the infant church still read from the prophets and law as the Jews did? Timothy was leading the church in Ephesus so they obviously would have been gentiles, or would they?

TImothy’s mother and grandmother were Jewish. Yes, the New Testament Church considered the Old Testament to be the Bible. The content of the New Testament is made up of those contemporary writings that the community also read during the Mass. (This is a very brief and simplistic explanation.)

The OT was always Scripture to the Early Church, the Apostolic Fathers quoted them constantly as Scripture. St. Timothy most likely used the Greek Septuagint.
