I have a question about the Fatima 1st Saturday devotion. Does attending the Sunday vigil Mass on Saturday evening and receiving communion at that Mass fulfill the requirement to receive communion on the 1st Saturday? I don’t know of any parish around here that offers a Saturday morning Mass, though some might have a communion service. Thanks.

Yes it does.

You must attend Mass on Sunday, but you know that right? The Sunday vigil Mass does not satisfy the Sunday obligation

Huh? Are you saying that a vigil Mass on Saturday night doesn’t satisfy the Sunday obligation?

A Saturday vigil Mass does clearly satisfy one’s Sunday Mass obligation.

(I was just wondering about the Vigil Mass as it applies to meeting the first Saturdays myself.)

I am so sorry. I was way wrong.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

CCC 2180… The precept of the Church specifies the law of the Lord more precisley:“On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass.’” The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day."

Now back to the orignal question.

The Fatima Crusader Issue 49 Summer 1995

On November 1,1927, Sister Lucy writes to her sponsor for confirmation, Dona Maria Filomena Morais de Miranda…"it consists in this: During five months on the first Saturday, to receive Jesus in Communion, recite a Rosary, keep Our Lady company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the rosary and make a confession. This confession can be made a few days earlier, and if in this previous confession you have forgotten the (required) intention one can offer the following confession for this intention, provided that on the first Saturday one receives Holy Communion in the state of grace, with the intention of repairing for offenses againts the Most Holy Virgin, and which afflict Her Immaculate Heart.2

Footnotes:
2) It is clear, according to this letter, that there is no need to express this intention to the confessor, in the spitit of reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Let us also make clear that the Mass of Saturday evening, even if it is an “anticipated Sunday Mass” can be counted as Mass of the first Saturday of the month.
