I received my daughter’s Certificate of Baptism in the mail today and was puzzled by the wording of my and my husband’s names. They’re on seperate lines. It’s goes like this:

This is to certify
That (daughter’s full name)
Child of (husband’s full name)
and (my name, but it’s only my first name and my maiden name)

I called the parish office to ask why my name is indicated only by my maiden name when I share my husband’s last name. The secretary who prepared the certificate said this is the right way to do it. I asked for an explanation, but she couldn’t give me one. She said the baby’s birth certificate is like that, too (I don’t have that on hand to look).

Can someone can tell me if this is the correct way to print a baptism certificate and why?

Thanks!

My Baptism certificate has my mother listed by her maiden name, too, and it is a new copy I had made just last year. As for the explanation “why”, I don’t know.

This is the correct way. They use your maiden name because that is a way of showing that you are the same person on your birth certificate and baptism certificate (if you were baptised as a baby also). You have to remember that later on in life that you will need to show proof of baptism when continuing her religious education and even her marriage at a Catholic church.

Yep - all the certificates in our house are like this too. Mine lists my parents, my mother by her maiden name, and my three kids have my husband’s and my names this way too. His name is listed, then my maiden name.

Yes, the official register requires the Mother’s Maiden Name. Every year, in the RCIA, I have to check back with those who gave only her married name.

I don’t know why it is this way, but it is invaluable to genealogists. Without the mother’s maiden name one can trace only the patriarchal line.

we are instructed to enter the baptismal record from the information on the birth certificate, which as long as I have been doing it, lists the mother’s maiden name. This becomes even more confusing with birth certificates from Mexico, because the parents’ last names include the last names of both of their parents. So the name the family goes by here does not usually agree with the birth certificates.
