Hello,
As some of you know from my previous posts, I am ready to convert to Catholicism. It has been a strange and interesting journey to this point. And I feel that I would be a fool to turn away from God now…
I will be in the Philippines in two weeks as a PC Volunteer. Now, I plan on attending Mass while overthere. I have seriously thought about converting there as well. But I still have some questions…
How does the Church view Catholic Charismatics? I have done a little reading on the El Shaddai movement in the country. It sounds interesting, but I am not sure if I should steer clear of this movement. From what I have read, the Church is concerned that this movement will eventually deviate from Church teachings.
I had a talk with my Parish’s Msgr during Inquiry class. He said that the Church values the Charismatics. He told me that I should avoid coming to conclusions about them. He went on to tell me that they are kind of strange to many in the Church, but that they have the potential to revive the laity. In other words, he told me that they are ok…
About Mary: I thought that Mary would be a roadblock for me. However, I have come to fully accept Her…Heck, I have already asked her to intercede for me in some of my prayers…
But, I have read and heard that some Filipinos take Mary to the next level…Do any of you have advice for me?
I realize that the decision to convert is between me and God…But would it be wise for me to wait to convert when I get back to the states in 2008? I realize that the Church is supposed to be Universal. I am just afraid that I will get a weird mix while in my new country.
About Lent:
I attended Ash Wednesday Mass. I have been doing my best to reflect during this season. However, I have run into a problem with fasting and abstaining.
Last weekend, I visited my grandparents. I didn’t know that they were planning a BBQ for me (kind of a going away party)…It was a Friday…and I performed a big no-no…I ate meat…
(My grandparents are non-Catholic).
I felt bad because I had abstained from meat on Ash Wednesday…But I couldn’t do it for Friday…
Is is right for someone to eat meat for family obligations? I know that sounds silly. But I really didnt want to offend my grandparents. This meal was for me.
Thanks
Joe
