I’m assuming you were baptized Catholic but your parents never afterward attended Mass, or had you attend religious education, or otherwise go on with your religous education. Is this correct?
If you were ‘only’ baptized Catholic but have had no other religious instruction in the Catholic faith, what you need to go is get involved in your local parish’s RCIA program. (this is NOT only for ‘converts’. It is for anyone wishing to learn about the Catholic faith). When you speak to the people there, they will help you. It is possible that you might be able to receive private instruction and to then receive the sacraments of Confession, First Communion, and Confirmation ‘outside’ of the normal RCIA course (which usually, though not always, goes from around September until the following Easter). But most likely you will have to ‘wait’ (and study) until Easter of 2009.
What you should NOT do is just ‘go to confession’ (assuming you have even studied enough to know what is involved) and then ‘just go to communion’ (same caveat). Your priest (and you) need to know exactly what you ‘know’ about Catholicism (hint: even studying cool sites such CA is not usually sufficient for an adult who has NOT been brought up Catholic, whether or not the person has been brought up in ‘any’ faith system, nonCatholic Christian or ‘other’).
And the best person to ask is your priest and/or religious ed director, anyway. Most Catholics here would say exactly the same. We can try to tell you what we know but we don’t know YOU and we don’t know all your circumstances, and most of us, while we ‘know’ the Faith, are neither ordained priests, other religious, or professional RCIA people. So make an appointment with your priest/ director and God bless you.
