Question about Confession and then receiving Eucharist

My question is this. Sometimes I go to confession before a daily mass and I literally walk out right before mass starts which I appreciate when the priest does that. However I don’t have time to do my penance before mass sometimes . Am I still in a state of moral sin until I do penance or can I receive and do penance following mass?

Your sins have been absolved when the priest gives you absolution, so you are no longer in mortal sin. Penance is for the remission of temporal punishment.
