Just need some help with a general confession…even though I wasnt a believer until almost a couple years ago…do I still confess everytime I strayed from God either intentionally or unintentionally.
Also is renouncing ways I put myself in danger of demonic attack necessary…say like using a ouija board…tarot cards, horoscopes…and consulting a fortune teller and psychic.
I want to renounce it,but is a confession the right place?

Also…I have been going to confession say for the past year but just mentioned recent sins…so do I mention them again…since they have been going on for quite some time…before I was a believer?

thanks

abit confused…your making your first communion? But you were received into the Church a year ago? And made your confession several times over the last year?

Did you forget mortal sins? If one forgets mortal sins ( we must confess them in number and kind (and circumstance that would change it like it was your brother that you killed) and if we forget some…they must be confessed as soon as we remember (the next confession)…if we hide them intentionally that invalidates the confession and one would need to reconfess any mortal sin from that confession and since then in addition to what was hidden and that one hid it…one needs to talk with the priest about such in confession…)

Are you making a devotional general confession where one did not forget anything…but one wants to go thru the sins of ones life again…like when one is making some big change…getting married…making vows…etc???.If it is a devotional general confession …one is not obliged to confess any particular sins --only need one sin one is sorry for etc…(only mortal sins that have not been confessed in number and kind)

So one may do then organize things as one would like…

One can confess all the mortal sins one can remember …or main catagories etc…no worries.

And yes you may reconfess those occult practices and add “I renounce these and all the works of the devil” in confession.

Thanks … I do get it…its just that…when I started going to the church I was not told how to do confession and so I only did confess what I thought was a sin since I started becoming a believer. I never felt bad for anything before that, including the occult practises, since I didnt believe in Jesus anyway. I am going to include the occult practises in my confession since I now feel bad about it.

There should be one comprehensive confession that includes all of your major past sins that you can remember. 1 paragraph or so …doesnt have to include any counts, except for things like for 10 years I engaged in so& so behavior and did so&so alot. After this confession, if after this effort and confession there is something you remember later, your already covered by your best effort and all is forgiven.

Welcome to our wonderful faith. It seems everyone pretty much covered your questions. Let me add, please ask your confessor any questions or uncertainties you may have. He is there to help and guide you. Tell him of the problems you are having. Confession can be tough but the Holy Spirit will help you, say a prayer beforehand to him. I am a firm believer in using the same priest every time. (Others aren’t) He will get to know you better and be better able to guide and help you. God Bless.

Where you received into the Church a year ago? (were you baptized ??? when?)

One is obliged to confess all mortal sins in number and kind etc since ones baptism…(not conditional baptism…by the way…one would have to go back before such)

My suggestion prepare anything grave matter (get an examination of conscience…look through the Catechism etc) in number and kind for you next confesion…and if you are not sure it was actually mortal…say so…but also go sit down with the priest in an appointment and explain what happened…ask him to help you …he can ask questions etc…in confession.

Any mortal sins will need to be confessed in number and kind…etc…and if one does not know the number…one does what one can…like “around Y” etc…

if he remembers a mortal sin later …he is obliged to confess it in the next confession…

Well for people who spent a decade or more in a rather libertine lifestyle,
think Warren Beatty or certain sports figures, where you know the number of years, can estimate the # of women, but not the # of acts. For such cases, rather than counting hairs on a head and always coming up with a rather large and inaccurate # , its better to relate it in another way.

There are situations where numbers are hard to come by and any guestimates are terrible estimates, and almost amounting to a lie, but not a lie in itself.
Wouldnt you agree?

Actually…all replies are helpful…

Also…I dont know what it means to be received into the church…I was baptized 44 years ago…but adopted out of the faith…did a search for my birth mother and found out in my 20’s I was baptized RC. Then in my 40’s, 2 years ago I started attending the RC church as part of a home care job and then just kept coming.

THats my story.

As far as confession goes…I thought for something to be a mortal sin…one has to know its a sin…I dont have a problem with confessing what is considered a mortal sin by the Catholic CHurch…but is it necessary if I didnt even know it was?🤷

One does what one can…but one still does 🙂

I may be that one has to say…prob more than x number a month for the last 12 years…

One needs to give the number a they can (the Church does not require the impossible)…(for mortal) one may not be able due to the time involved…the unconsciousness of the thing…or bad memory be able to give more than a a approximation…

many things can be mortal for those who never heard the term…but yes one needs to know in some real way…

some things are very obvious…people know it is very serious…like murder adultery etc…

others are less so…

the Priest can help …he can ask questions etc as well if you ask him to help…
