This may seem like a weird question to some…
but I was baptized Roman Catholic under very strange circumstances…
then adopted out of a foster home at 15 mons…
found out in my twenties I was baptized RC…
am coming back to the faith of my baptism slowly but surely since I started attending a RC church here in the city I now live in a year and a half ago. I will be talking the RCIA classes this fall, as I was not raised in any CHristian denomination and have only tried out a few Protestant churches off and on since my twenties til a couple years back. I am now in my early 40-'s.
The parents who raised me were Protestant and live too far away and would not come to my confirmation, so thats not an issue. My birth mother (whom I re-united with in my twenties) is Roman Catholic, was not at my baptism (as she wasnt even told about it) and she would come to my confirmation no matter where it was…provided her health holds up (it has been up and down)

Now my question is…I was thinking about the possibility of getting confirmed in the parish I was baptized in, not my current parish. It would be for a few personal reasons, which I prefer to keep private…and I wondered if anyone knows who I would talk to …to find out the legalities and logistics (if there are any) THe province I live in is far from the province I was baptized in.

since you are not a current registered parishoner of that parish, you would need to talk to the parish pastor of that parish you want to be confirmed in.

You need the “permission” of the bishop who is going to do the confirmation.

Can. 886 §1. A bishop in his diocese legitimately administers the sacrament of confirmation even to faithful who are not his subjects, unless their own ordinary expressly prohibits it.

Unless your own bishop objects (not very likely) you can be confirmed in your parish/diocese of baptism. This is a very simple administrative thing where the pastor informs the bishop that you’re not actually a parishioner of the diocese, and as long as the bishop agrees to do it everything is fine.

If it’s a question of the priest at that parish administering the Confirmation, this is different. Because you are already a Catholic by virtue of your baptism, the local priest cannot receive you into the Church as he would someone who was never Catholic (say a baptised Protestant)–you can’t be received into the Church because you’re already in the Church. The priest does not automatically have faculties to confirm you. The bishop might give him these faculties, but that’s not a given.

sounds like travel for you and your mother would be the biggest problem. Sit down and talk with the priest where you are taking the classes to prepare for confirmation and tell him your story. He needs to know this background in any case to make sure you have every thing you need, and do explain any special circumstances. Generally your pastor is the priest in charge of the parish where you live now and he has jurisdiction over sacraments for you, but it is usually a formality to get permission to celebrate them elsewhere. But that means the priest in the new parish is in charge of your preparation, so you want to make sure there is good communication between the two priests to make sure your preparation is adequate and nothing falls through the cracks.

See your priest.

Welcome Home!

That’s awesome. This Spring I traveled to the Church where I took my first Communion. I had not been there in 25 years. It was so awesome. Not long after my first Communion my Father passed away and we moved. I was young, and never gave that town a whole lot of thought. Glad I had that experience. And one fascinating thing. Some people from the Congregation actually remembered my Mom and Dad. Awesome day.

Thanks to all for your responses and my priest does and has known the whole story.

I would rather receive 1st communion and confirmation in my own parish…however…I was just wondering if it was possible to go to where I was baptized to do that…
I got my answer…thanks Fr Serpa

we shall see.
🙂
