At my school, people commonly use Christ’s name as a swear word and with complete lack of reverence. I have been told by a few people that I must tell people not to do this if I hear them. Most of the time I make sure to let them know, but today I heard a few kids casually use our Lord’s name in place of a swear word and I didn’t say anything to them because I hardly know them at all and they’re a few years older than I am. I knew that I still should have said something, but I didn’t. So I realize that this is a sin but my question is whether it is a mortal sin. I feel really guilty about it and I want to know if I am worthy to receive communion at Mass or if I need to go to confession first.
Thanks in advance to everyone who responds!

We are obliged to admonish the sinner as one of the spiritual works of mercy. However, I would not say it is amortal sin to not say anything in that instance. I, too, hear such things. I try to just say “whoa, whoa,” don’t say that, or “I don’t want to hear that!” or something along those lines if I can.

It’s not a sin at all. If you feel threatened you should pray for them and that would be sufficient. What you are doing is the best thing that we christians can do, and that is to set the best example that we can. That sometimes speaks louder than words. Is this a catholic school? Just curious. If it is tell your priest how you feel and maybe he will address the problem at mass or in a way that won’t directly envolve you. They are pretty experienced in these matters. But you a coward; no way! You sound like a child of God’s, a person that really loves his neighbors and is concerned about the well being of their souls. Bless You! Brenda

Maybe you don’t have to say anything, but you could cross yourself when you hear it. People will probably notice, but aren’t as likely to get defensive.

Sice we are living in the New Evangilization, you aren’t obliged to admonish the sinner in the same manner as it used to be. I agree that you could cross yourself, or tell them they are insulting your faith, etc. It does depend on the situation.
