Greetings!

I was at Daily Mass today, a much smaller and more intimate gathering that I am traditionally used to but the mass began (well before the order of mass began) with what a few Hail Marys and some other Priest/Congregation responses that I was completely unfamiliar with. So the Priest would say something, congregation would respond- then a Hail Mary but not in that order every time. Wasn’t the Rosary but I was just a tad lost. I’m hoping that perhaps someone out there has some insight so that I’m ready next time! What exactly was going on before the order of mass began?
Thanks in advance!

A few Hail Marys with verses in between…

Sounds like the Angelus. This is a prayer that is traditionally recited three times a day - at 6am (or dawn), noon and 6pm.

It is often said before or after Mass if the timing of Mass happens to coincide, but doesn’t form part of it.

Does this sound like what you were hearing?

"The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary
And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary …

Behold the handmaid of the Lord
Be it done unto me according to Thy word.
Code:
Hail Mary . . .
And the Word was made Flesh
And dwelt among us.
Code:
Hail Mary . . .
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:

Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts;
that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son,
was made known by the message of an angel,
may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection,
through the same Christ Our Lord.

Amen. "

There’s often a verse that is added at the end (but not always)

'May the Divine Assistance remain always with us
And may the souls of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen."

That may be it! Thank you so much! It would make sense since daily mass was at noon but I am going to take note and when I’m there again next week, I’ll know for sure. Thank you so much for your quick response!

Shucks, tweren’t nothin’ :tiphat:

Isn’t going to a week day Mass wonderful! Usually not more than 30 people, sometimes as few as 10 and you can really appreciate the Mass without any distractions from your own family! Sounds odd, but I schedule my lectures so that I can attend Friday morning Mass; and while there is sometimes no Homily (which is sad, because I can always take teaching) it’s more special to me than Sunday Mass.

Yes! 👍

I always liked weekday masses; though ours are a bit larger. We have two 6:30 and 9:00. There are usually a bit over a hundred at each.

wow at Daily Mass, that’s wonderful! Is that every day?

Yes. But then we have some 3500 families in the parish.

A lot of the attendees are retired like me. But there are also a good number of mothers with their little ones - especially Asians.

We have three masses Saturday evening - English, Spanish and Vietnamese - and eight on Sunday - five English and three Vietnamese. All but the Spanish run 600 - 800 attendees. I won’t give the number for the Vietnamese masses except to say we have occasionally been cited by the city for overcrowding.

Awesome that so many attend daily Mass. I wish it were something spoken about more on Sunday Mass. It saddens me how many people seem so lost and if they spent more time at Mass it quite possibly could give them peace.
I pray for more people to show up and share in the peace so many of us feel.

Jerry, you do realize you’re been replying to a bunch of threads from last September, right? Not sure if you were doing it intentially –

I can’t attend daily but I do regularly go to a 7 am Mass on Tuesdays when I travel to the city for work (I telecommute on other days).

I too really like the simplicity and intimacy of daily Mass.
