Is it a duty to your parents to get a financially good career and raise a kid if it would make your parents happy and if it would worry them that you don’t or does it just pertain to helping them when they’re down or need old-age help like escorting them? Thanks!

Your duty to your parents is to get to Heaven and to honor them. However, honoring them is not the same as doing things because your parents manipulate or make you feel guilty for doing what you feel called to do.

How God calls you to live out that vocation is your duty to God. If you are called to a career that is not financially advantageous (such as a field of social work or teaching versus being a Wall St. whiz) or you are called to remain single or enter the priesthood/religious life, then that is your call.

I always thought of honoring your parents as bringing them honor. It does not mean you must always get along with, love, adore, be happy around, or agree with your parents. Some people in ugly situations are not able to bring their children around their parents, or have contact with them. So this leads me to believe that I should take care of my faith, character, and reputation, bring good to my family name, and never to bring shame upon my parents’ names.

Of course it is also loving and helpful to lend them helping hands and assistance when needed.
