Ok, our lay-instructor at RCIA last night said something that didn’t seem right to me. She commented that the Trinity is all about relationships. The Father created the world out of love for his Son, The Son acts in everything out of love of the Father and out of the love the Father and Son had for each other came the Holy Spirit.

I always thought the Trinity was eternal- all three persons of the Trinity have always existed. Is there any Catholic writing anyone can point me to that further explains my instructor’s views.

Does this sound right?

Theology for Beginners by Frank Sheed is great for learning about the Trinity and beginning theology.

Your instructor is right, but you have to remember that when speaking of the Son begotten of the Father, and of the Holy Spirit proceeding from the Father and the Son, that there is no chronological time involved. The Son and the Holy Spirit are co-eternal with the Father AND the Son is begotton of the Father and the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son.

It’s something we find difficult to conceive of and yet that is the Truth that has been revealed to us. And so we call it a mystery of the faith.
