Every saints have a merits but how if they merits are gone or become empty?
I thought it was standard Catholic doctrine that Christ’s merits remit the eternal punishment due to sin, and an indulgence remits the temporal punishment due to sin. How does that square with this suggestion? The expression ‘treasury of merits’ isn’t just to do with the merits of the Saints, but the merits of Christ Himself. The Church, being His body, has access to HIS merits, which of course are infinite!
No. It is true that an indulgence remits only the temporal punishment, but the merits of Christ apply to *both *eternal and temporal punishment (CCC 1478). The Church teaches:I thought it was standard Catholic doctrine that Christ’s merits remit the eternal punishment due to sin, and an indulgence remits the temporal punishment due to sin.
The Treasury of the Church is the infinite value, which can never be exhausted, which Christ’s merits have before God. (CCC 1476)
