According to Wikipedia, and to an English teacher I knew many years ago, the majestic plural (pluralis maiestatis in Latin) is the use of a plural pronoun to refer to a single person holding a high office, such as a monarch, bishop, pope, university rector, or God Himself. It is also called the Royal pronoun, the Royal ‘we’ or the Victorian ‘we’. The more general word for the use of “we” to refer to oneself is nosism, from the Latin nos.
In Genesis, for example, God says, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth…”
