This is a question from my Protestant friend:

Why is our Lord depicted with long hair in almost, if not all of Christian iconography? How can one explain when Paul says that a man with long hair is “disgraceful” to God?

My guess would be that Paul was talking about having really long hair…like past the shoulders or something,which would look feminine. In most depictions of Jesus his hair is not that long but in my opinion they skate pretty close to the line of what Paul calls disgraceful…

I’ve read that back then women wore their hair down to their waste. That was considered long hair. What Jesus has is considered a regular guy’s haircut for the Jews back then. The Romans are the one’s who came up with the short hairstyle that most men have today.

As someone who had long hair many years ago (I looked kinda like Gregg Allman, only handsome!), I see nothing wrong with it. I had to get it cut because:
A) I had to appear before a judge (checkered past, y’all!!) who was known for “throwing the book at minorities and hippies”, according to my lawyer.
B) I eventually had to get a full-time job!

Also, let’s face it, Saul of Tarsus was just a bit of a misogynist, so his statement is not surprising.
