I am reading through the Catechism and am on the section of Profession of Faith. The catechism states “We must believe in no one but God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”. I suppose because I am a recovering Protestant the idea of Mary is still something I need to work out. I have listened to talks on youtube from Catholic priests and apologists. Some of the talks I have listened to speak of Mary having divine power over Satan and his demons. That Mary will defeat him. That we should call upon Mary in some times of struggle. I do feel like Mary has a lot of power in the Catholic Church and is given a stance similar to that of Christ and the Father. The thought of praying to or asking anyone but Christ for help makes me feel like I am doing something wrong and placing someone before Him. Am I seeing this in the wrong light? Please help me to better understand.

We ask Mary to appeal to God to for us. Mary intercedes for us. We pray to the Saints to appeal to God for us.
Any power over the devil/demons that Mary has, is given to her from God. It is not similar to God.

God can choose from amongst His creations ( thats us) who He gives different gifts and charisms too

Don’t worry, to Catholics God is above everyone and everything.

The first thing you need to know is: the Virgin Mary has a very special role in our salvation. Just as Eve had a role when our fathers fell, Our Lady has a role when it comes to being saved and receiving graces from God. She is the proxy throught which we receive God’s gifts. Her role is being Co-redemptrix.

Some theologians usually say that Christ is the head of the Church, the faithful form the body, and the Virgin Mary is the neck which connects the head with the body.

Mary doesn’t have any power of her own and doesn’t want any. God has chosen to work through her in some cases, and has given her certain tasks to perform on his behalf, such as distributing grace and fighting the Devil. The Devil finds being vanquished by Mary to be very humiliating, precisely because she is not an all-powerful God, but rather a very humble, lowly human woman.

You need to adjust your thinking. I realize maybe this is difficult for some Protestants but honeslty, if you’re a reforming Protestant you just have to accept that Protestant beliefs are incorrect about many things and Mary is one of those things.

Mary had no God like powers, She did have the ability as all mothers to talk to her son and to intercede on the behalf of others. That is why as a Catholic we pray for mary to intercede on out behalf.

Our Blessed Mother Mary knows that everything she has comes from the Lord. Her heart is one with the heart of Jesus Christ our Lord. She is truly our Mother, given to us at the foot of the cross.

She is likened to a clear pane of glass, with no smudges, that allows the Light of the Blessed Trinity to shine through perfectly!

Divine worship is given only to God. Veneration worship is given only to angels and saints. Those venerated are honored for their sanctity, asked to intercede before the divine Majesty, and imitated in their love and service of God, but not adored, or asked for divine help, or given sacrifice or the offering of something precious to God.

Many a Protestant would say: I have Jesus, I do not need Mary. For Catholics, it is not an either or, it is a both and. Mary is first among saints and we have recourse to her, so we Catholics take all the heavenly help we can get.

The last recorded words of Mary in the Bible, “Do whatever He tells you.” Mary leads everyone to her son.

And any power given to Mary by GOD always comes and it is used because of the will of GOD.

That this power would be given to a woman was predicted in the Old Testament in the Book of Genesis, by none other than GOD Himself when HE spoke of HER who would give birth to GOD’s only SON Jesus.

Peace!

I’m a revert & struggle with this as well. I can’t remember where I read it, but what has helped me the most…

Whatever can be said about the Virgin Mary can be said about the Church & whatever can be said about the Church can be said about the Virgin Mary.

So I look to the Church as my Mother, my Queen, my Patroness.
