Question About Missing Mass

A few weeks ago, my grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer. The doctors believe he has about one year to live. He lives in another state and I would like to see him before he dies. Because I don’t have a car, my best friend has offered to take me to see him tomorrow (Sunday). Because he lives so far away, we will probably have to leave in early morning, before Mass even starts at my parish. Of course, I will make every attempt to find a way to attend Mass, but if I miss it, will it be a mortal sin? I would really like to see him right now, because this might be his last Christmas.
 
Is there a Saturday evening Mass in your parish or nearby?
 
It isn’t “automatic”. When I was travel across country, my priest instructed me to TRY and attend a mass on Sunday. If I was unable to do so after making a SINCERE attempt, I was to devote some time in prayer saying the rosary or reading scripture or both and then attend mass one day during the week when I got back.

Have you checked what towns you might be near between 9 and 11 AM, and if there might be a Catholic Church near by?
 
i would think it somewhat unusual if your parish didnt have a saturday vigil, but if they dont i would recomend doing what Br. Rich said. i would suggest finding out what cities you travel through and using masstimes.org to find the churches.
 
Do your best to follow the advice here. Seek a Mass along the way, a vigil mass tonight or find one late on Sunday. I’d speak to your priest about it afterward if you do miss it.You most likely should do as Sir Night was advised . One more thing- maybe you could attend Mass with your Grandfather? Is he bedridden or in a place that does not have Mass? Are there any other family members around who could assist? I guess this assumes that your family is Catholic to begin with.
