Question About Rosary Format

Dear Truthinator,
I know! It feels like I’ve been Baptist-brainwashed or something …
I used to consider it riduculous to think the Church Militant represented by the Woman in Revelation 12 was to be associated with Miriam, as the Catholic Church said! Then I read the end of chapter 11, which spoke of the Ark of the Covenant. I knew Miriam was the Ark of the New Covenant, and suddenly it hit me: “The Church is typified by Miriam, the Immaculate Conception and the first-ever follower of her Son! And as she is the Ark of the Covenant, in a sense, chapter 12 only CONTINUES the beginning of a grand revelation begun in 11! Therefore, the Woman must be both the New Israel, the Church Militant, AND Miriam, mother of Our Lord, clothed in his splendor and glory, sharing in the Glory of God, as will all the faithful saints one day!”
It’s really quite amazing to think I’ve missed for so long these things.
It’s great to hear how open you are to the Catholic Church. This is truly a great grace.

If you would like to grow and become more comfortable with the Hail Holy Queen, then I recommend going here. It has the Latin text to the, “Salve Regina,” (which is the name of the Hail Holy Queen in Latin), and recordings. There are two on the website, one of a single friar chanting it, and one of a group chanting it. I recommend the group one (the first one in mp3 format). Individually their voices, perhaps, aren’t as beautiful, but in a group it is an amazing thing to hear.

It has long been a Dominican tradition to chant the Salve before going to bed (for Compline). In fact, they introduced this pratice into the Catholic Church. Of all the chants of the Salve Regina, the Dominican one is the most complex, but it is also the most beautiful.

I really recommend listening to it, and following along with it with the music provided-- either in ancient style, or in modern style, both are there.

If you want to sing along it will take a while, it is a complex chant, but I think it is well worth it. It is a beautiful song to our Lady. Once I learn it completely I’d love to substitute my recitation of the Hail Holy Queen for singing the Salve Regina at the end of my rosary. Just an idea.

God bless.

Try therosary.info

I printed this out when I didn’t know how to pray it myself, but then, I did buy the cd version.

I learned the Rosary *just *the way you say it. Recently I’ve added a meditation (quote from scrupture) before I say each Ave. I follow the formula you can find here. It’s been invaluable to me so that the prayers don’t become rote.
But I must ask: Does anyone else think it odd to call Miriam “our life and our hope” or “Queen of Heaven”?
I had thought so, and then it was explained to me that it’s poor grammar. Don’t think of calling Miriam, “Our life, our sweetness and hour hope,” because you’re not.

You’re actually saying,
"*Mother *of mercy,
*mother *of our life,
*mother *of our sweetness, and
*mother *of our hope.

I bought the same CD set and it’s astounding. I use it more for meditation than recitation out loud, because they do speak a little fast for me – so I follow along ‘in my head’. But it’s one of the most beautiful versions ever.

I am also working on a powerpoint presentation to combine all of these elements into an electronic prayerbok, something like the virtual rosary but is set up like a 54-day Novena and includes a Spiritual Communion. I should be done by next week. I’ll send it to you later, if you like!

Shalom!

Guys, I have a question:

When it talks about the Fatima Prayer, am I to pray it on the same bead as the Glory Be? Or how?

Also, when it talks about meditating on the Mysteries, do I meditate on all of them in a section (all Joyful Mysteries, for example), or on just a single one?

And on what is “Hail Holy Queen” prayed?

I normally pray the Glory Be, Fatima Prayer and the Our Father of the next decade all on the single bead.

You spend each decade (Our Father, 10 Hail Mary’s, Glory Be and O my Jesus) meditating on a single one of the mysteries (for example the Annunciation, by itself, not ALL the Joyful Mysteries together).

And you pray the Hail Holy Queen at the end of your five decades - on the medal after the fifth ‘single’ bead.

Thank you.

May I ask, was it hard for you at first to recite the words and meditate simultaneously on the Mystery? If it was, how did you get better?

Thank you.

I’m a cradle catholic, so I’ve been doing it since childhood. Some of our converts here have found it difficult at first. I’d say plenty of practice is the answer 🙂

Thank you.

Well as LilyM said, i too am a cradle catholic, but i went off the rails for about 30 odd years and now im only just coming back to the faith, so im still struggling a little bit trying to do the both at the same time. My mind still wonders off as well at times thinking about the shopping list etc, but im improving…
But, in saying that, there is this little gem of a site called virtal rosary, you download the software (free) and it goes through the rosary including the mysteries and also there is prayers down the bottom people have requested on there and it makes it so beautiful
What it does is, it goes in the normal format of the rosary, but when you say the hail Mary’s, it will then give you a bit of the mystery your currently reflecting on, then say another hail Mary, and it gives you a bit more, its really good.
Here is the link for it:

I made a file for a rosary prayer that include Scripture Reading in all 4 Mysterious, Glorious, Joyful, Luminous, and Sorrowful. If anyone is interesting, I’ll send them a file.

Thank you.

The answer is practice. Don’t worry too much about being perfect. Do your best to recite the vocal prayers and meditate on the mysteries, and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you to pray as you ought. You’ll make progress. Although I am a cradle Catholic, I never prayed the rosary much until a year ago. I also had to learn to balance both. After a while, it becomes second nature and meditation comes more easily.

If at first you want to use a program like what dolphinlove advocates, that’s fine as well. I recommend taking a look at this Dominican website on the rosary, specifically at the ‘how to pray the rosary without distractions’ for each specific mystery. It gives ten points of reflection for each mystery of the rosary for easy meditation.

If you want, do this as long as you’re having difficulty balancing both. However, in the long run, you’re going to want to meditate on your own, so I recommend weaning yourself off them, although they can give a helpful jump-start to your praying the rosary.

Last week I mae a powerpoint presentation and put it into a slideshow format. It has each rosary bead “illuminated” with the corresponding prayers. It also includes scripture meditations for each “Hail Mary” as well as the novena prayers at the beginning and the end. The hosting site has kind of made the fonts go a bit wonky, but it may be of some use to you:

Joyful Mysteries
Sorrowful Mysteries
Glorious Mysteries

isn’t it cool when you have those ‘ah-ha!’ moments of epiphany?
another thing to consider too is that if Mary is the Spouse of the Holy Spirit then she would deserve to have the title Queen of Heaven–legalistically.

Thank you.

I started out using pictures for each of the mysteries that I made into a scrapbook. you can buy the prints on eBay or you can also get this fantastic video/DVD of Renaissance paintings from catholicradiodramas.com

also–nothing is so beautiful as hearing Pope John Paul’s voice (when it was still strong and vibrant) sing the Hail Holy Queen in latin on the CD of the Pope’s rosary—you can still find them on eBay too. It will leave you weeping for the beauty of it!

The Confraternity of the Rosary is also a good thing to join–easy to keep the vows and it gives you the added prayers of MILLIONS!
do a Google on it. St. Louis de Montfort too—there is a whole Montfortian Spirituality centered on the Consecration to Jesus by the Hands of Mary–very very deep. Here is a link that explains Mary’s place in all this (warning take it slowly–little bites):

ewtn.com/library/Montfort/SECRET.HTM

welcome to this deep spiritual well of fresh new waters!

there are other prayers you can use the rosary beads for also–I am also a Eucharistic Apostle of the Divine Mercy and meet in cenacle twice a month. definitely check out the Divine Mercy Chaplet—it is the most haunting and touching set of prayers I have ever heard:

ewtn.com/Devotionals/mercy/dmmap.htm

ewtn.com/vondemand/audio/seriessearchprog.asp?seriesID=502&T1=Divine+Mercy
(the second one from the National Shrine is better IMHO)

there are also shorter chaplets of beads for specifc prayers–I also do the Little Crowns of Mary which is three sets of three meditating on her Queenship–very lovely and I made my own beads for it with leather and pony beads.
