This may be a silly question but has been on my mind for quite a while…

Isn’t hell a place people are locked into . . . .never able to get out?
I have always been told it is …SO
Why is the devil able to roam around?

The closest answer I can give is that the nature of an angel is different than the nature of a human soul, by we all get our judgment at the end of our lifetimes. The. The fallen angels (demons) haven’t reached the end of their lifetimes yet – that’ll be at the end of the world.

I don’t know if there’s a definitive “scientific” answer to your good question, but let me posit a catechism paragraph that may be informative:*CCC#395 The power of Satan is, nonetheless, not infinite. He is only a creature, powerful from the fact that he is pure spirit, but still a creature. He cannot prevent the building up of God’s reign. Although Satan may act in the world out of hatred for God and his kingdom in Christ Jesus, and although his action may cause grave injuries - of a spiritual nature and, indirectly, even of a physical nature- to each man and to society, the action is permitted by divine providence which with strength and gentleness guides human and cosmic history. It is a great mystery that providence should permit diabolical activity, but “we know that in everything God works for good with those who love him.”*This tells us that God “allows” the devil to permeate this world apparently from his position in hell. We also see this in Scripture in the opening verses of the book of Job. In a similar way, we can imagine the activity of the holy angels, who always bear the face of God (Matt. 18:10), yet can act in this world without “leaving” heaven, so to speak. Eventually, those in heaven and hell (sheep and goats; cf. Matt 25), will be forever separated at the Second Coming.

thanks for reply.
what you said makes sense…

What is interesting is that God allows satan to pester us.
In doing so, God gives us the opportunity to freely
choose Him over satan, almost like a test.
No wonder God is so wise.

by the way…I like your handle:

People in hell are locked there forever.
The devil roams around because God allows it. However, as the Book of Revelation says, at the end of days, the devil will be thrown into the lake of fire, where he will “be tormented day and night for ever and ever” (Rev 20: 10)
I presume the devil is so free now because something good comes out of it that would not occur otherwise. I would think the Book of Job speaks of this very matter, and that the Book of Job helps us to understand this very mystery, of the freedom of Satan in the world now (a mystery I only dimly understand now myself).
Will we only understand this well when we are illuminated by God in heaven?

You could say without Satan wandering around, Jesus would not have had to die for us.

If Satan had have been locked up straight away, we would all be living in the Garden of Eden.

I guess it is like when my mum let me have my own front door key for the first time, I had to show I was responsible enough to be allowed to keep it.

Those in heaven will have all eternity to understand everything in an ecstasy of His Infinite Love.

Satan is free to roam around on the earth and in hell (which is in the center of the earth) until the end of the world comes.

When the world ends, the devil and all other fallen angels and humans who are not found written in the Lamb’s Book of Life are thrown into the Lake of Fire, which is different from hell.

There is coming a time when the earth and the universe will be rolled up like a scroll and then the Lord will create a NEW heaven and a NEW earth.

Scriptures are available upon request.
