Hi catholic0913,

Firstly - it is totally acceptable for you to do the 54 day rosary novena. It’s just praying the rosary that has already been approved by the Vatican.

Secondly - rarely does the Vatican take the time to actually approve individual apparitions. So I don’t think the Vatican actually independently approved this apparition, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do the devotion.

This website seems to break down various Marian apparitions. It places this particular apparition in the ambiguously defined “Traditionally Approved” category miraclehunter.com/marian_apparitions/approved_apparitions/pompeii/index.html

I take this to mean that - no, the Vatican did not independently approve the apparition, but did beatify Bartolo Longo (who was closely associated with the miracle and helped spread and encourage the 54 rosary novena). So be doing so, they had to have considered the miracle to be supernatural, and thus the beatification is sufficient to consider the apparition approved.

That’s just a guess, though. Maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in. I’ll only add that the Vatican only gets involved when it has to. It’s happy to leave apparitions to local authorities as long as the influence of the vision remains local. So it’s not like every apparition has to be approved by the Vatican before any Catholic can follow it.

In any case, I hope that’s helpful!!

Hi
Again just curious, what does it exactly mean to be approved “traditionally”? I didn’t know that there are different categories for approvals granted by the church

Hi,

As far as I know, the Church doesn’t assign categories to approvals. This website is simply asserting that it’s approved by tradition rather than a formal action on the part of the Vatican.

Hope that helps!
