I’m not sure I understand your question. Are you asking why a non-Catholic is not going to be the next pope?

I think you are asking why there are no Eastern Catholic Cardinals who are being given public consideration as a possible successor to Pope Benedict XVI.
First there are no Former Anglcian clergy who have been created Cardinal.
Secondly any Catholic male can be elected Pope, which would include Eastern Catholic males, or converts from Anglicanism, even if they are not Cardinals. While it has been centuries since a non-Cardinal was elected Pope, it could still happen. While speculation as to who may be elected is something that the Press, both Catholic and Secular will speculate about, and member’s of the Church will discuss, the Cardinals really don’t discuss such issues in public, and are barred from the type of politicing and campagning that we see in secular elections. So it is up to the Cardinals, under the guidance of the Holy Ghost to determine if anyone Eastern, Western or Anglican Ordinariate is elected Pope.

Just to clarify: Eastern Catholic is in union with Rome. Eastern Orthodox is not. The Orthodox have their own pope as they believe differently on the issue of succession and due to the Schism.

Honestly, we cannot really say. Per the rules set in place by John Paul II, the conclave would begin somewhere between March 15 and March 20. Benedict just issued a change which gives the College of Cardinals the authority to move the date up, but this is only if all the cardinals agree to it. Many are saying that the conclave could begin March 9, 10, or 11. It could, but there’s no guarantee. And we will not know until the College of Cardinals makes the decision. And they have no power to make such a decision until the Pope has already stepped down. So the earliest we would hear would be Friday, March 1st.
And then, of course, there’s no guarantee how long the conclave will last.
If everything lines up for you and the conclave begins on March 9th or 10th and they end up choosing a new pope by the 13th or 14th, you may just find yourself in St. Peter’s Square to hear the words “Habemus Papam”. Lucky you.

I don’t know if you are coming back to CAF, but I just had to ask if you were able to be there yesterday. The election did fall right in the middle of your Rome trip. I’m jealous.
