Question about the Entrance Antiphon and Communion Antiphon

Is the Entrance Antiphon and Communion Antiphon optional in the Novus Ordo ? I know they can be either sung or said, but can they be omitted ?
 
The Entrance Hymn & Communion Hymns may take the place of the Antiphons but if those hymns are not sung the Antiphons must be sung or recited.

Ok, thank you. I was wondering why my parish omitted them on Sundays, but not on weekdays.

That is awesome that your parish uses them on weekdays! In my experience very few ever do. My work schedule often allows me to attend Mass at different parishes during the week. And, of a dozen or more in the area I have only seen them used by one priest (but not the other priest) in one parish.

Hi James, I wonder why some don’t include them on weekdays ?
I looked at the Ordinary of the Mass in my missal and there is nothing to indicate they are optional and may be omitted.

If no one answers here this evening, I’ll ask the priest after Monday’s noon Mass.

On weekdays we usually sing during the entrance and then use the antiphon at communion. 🤷 😃

Most just use hymns instead. As Phemie already mentioned that is an option. It may not be mentioned in the Missal but it is mentioned in the GIRM:

**The singing at this time is done either alternately by the choir and the people or in a similar way by the cantor and the people, or entirely by the people, or by the choir alone. In the dioceses of the United States of America there are four options for the Entrance Chant: (1) the antiphon from the Roman Missal or the Psalm from the Roman Gradual as set to music there or in another musical setting; (2) the seasonal antiphon and Psalm of the Simple Gradual; (3) a song from another collection of psalms and antiphons, approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop, including psalms arranged in responsorial or metrical forms; (4) a suitable liturgical song similarly approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop.

There is a parish in the area that uses the Entrance Antiphon and the Communion Antiphon during Sunday Mass. They are chanted and it is beautiful. I’m not 100% sure but I think they only do it during Advent and maybe Lent. I don’t go there often enough to know for sure.

Ok, I thought you meant they omitted it completely and went right into the Greeting. Anyhow, thanks for the link. I’ve never read the GIRM, but I suppose I should :o
 
The Entrance and Communion Antiphons are always used at Daily Mass here at St. Henry in Nashville, Tn. At Sunday Mass the hymns are used. BTW our retired Choir Director and current pianist, John Adrian has written many wonderful songs we use as meditations. They are called Songs from the Gospels and he has 4 Cd’s of them available.
 
From the 2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) approved for the USA, which can be accessed from romanrite.com/girm.html :
“48. … If there is no singing at the entrance, the antiphon in the Missal is recited either by the faithful, or by some of them, or by a lector; otherwise, it is recited by the priest himself, who may even adapt it as an introductory explanation (cf. above, no. 31).”

“87. … If there is no singing, however, the Communion antiphon found in the Missal may be recited either by the faithful, or by some of them, or by a lector. Otherwise the priest himself says it after he has received Communion and before he distributes Communion to the faithful.”
