Question about the Hail Holy Queen.........

Is the Hail Holy Queen saying that Mary is our life our sweetness and our hope?
Or is it saying that she is the Mother of our life sweetness and hope? To me, personally, it sounds like it could go both ways. (I always say the second option though)

"Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy [and of] our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

Yes, the Hail, Holy Queen refers to Mary as “our life, our sweetness, and our hope.” To recognize this, take out the “Mother of Mercy” part, which is an appositive, and read the opening phrase without it to see the connection of words.

You might be wondering, “Isn’t Jesus ‘our life, our sweetness, and our hope’?” The answer is yes, but this phrase still works for Mary, because she is the Mediatrix by which we can get to Jesus Her Divine Son.

The answer becomes clear when you examine the Latin:

Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiæ, vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Misericordiae is in the genetive (possessive), but it is the only modifier for Mater, as vita, dulcedo and spes are all in the nominative. Thus, we are addressing Mary as our life, sweetness and hope, here.
 
One of my favourite prayers… I love chanting it in Latin. Simply beautiful.🙂

And don’t forget, she brought us our Llfe, our sweetness and our hope by giving birth to our Savior. GOd Bless, Memaw
