I hope i’m in the right place. I consider myself non-denominational, i was raised southern baptist but my family hasn’t attended church in years. I know my mom enjoys her morning bible readings and devotionals, though. I see her do it all the time, especially with her being out of work temporarily.

Anyways. I became interested in catholicism and wanted to look into it purely because, from an outsiders perspective, catholics are good at making their life revolve around their faith. All the holidays and the prayers, etc. And that’s what i feel as if God is wanting me to do - to devote myself to him and not be quite so in the world as i am.

I don’t intend to convert, but i would love to prayerfully observe some of the holidays somehow and commit to doing some of the prayers. The first one i found that stood out to me, called out to me, was the Sacred Heart of Jesus prayer. I was wondering, what can you all tell me about that one? Like…i’m sure its referencing themes and bible versus, but i have a headache and didn’t sleep much last night so i can’t really think it through right now.

I had considered lighting candles as well as praying, but mom is adamantly against candles in the house for a multitude of reasons so i intend to respect her wish. I do like the symbolism of lighting a candle while praying, though. I like a lot of these things i’ve mentioned because they keep my heart and mind focused on God and the lessons and stories in the bible, instead of everything in the world. I’m easily distracted.

Prayers of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Prayer Intentions
[SacredHeart] Dear Friends in Christ: Please join me in devotional prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Prayers to the Wounded Heart of Jesus O my Most Loving and Gentle Jesus, I desire with all the affections of my heart, that all beings should praise Thee, honor Thee and glorify Thee eternally for that sacred wound wherewith Thy divine side was rent. I deposit, enclose, conceal in that wound and in that opening in Thy Heart, my heart and all my feelings, thoughts, desires, intentio…

Hello, it’s great that you want to pray to Jesus and console his Sacred Heart.

There are many Sacred Heart of Jesus prayers. Did you have a particular one in mind? Or are you just asking about the devotion generally? As Irishmom noted, there is a prayer thread you can join with some of the prayers on it.

Thank you so much!! This is the one that i found first on google and wrote down, i found a picture of it on that link you showed me. I intend to just read through the link and see which one(s) stand out to me as something I can understand well enough and hopefully commit to praying daily. I’m bad about following through with commitments.

This is the first one i found on google that i liked, i got the pic from the link above. I just wanted a simple, easy to understand, daily prayer to write down and put in my little standing frame. I have a few i got from the store for this purpose, to write down prayers and put them in easy spots like on my desk or the top of my dresser. I already wrote down the Prayer of St. Francis, too. Still looking for a bedtime prayer.

That’s a fine prayer to the Sacred Heart. It’s also good to have a picture of Jesus’ Sacred Heart to pray in front of (a holy card or prayer card will work).

The Sacred Heart devotion goes back to the 1200s and there have been a lot of saints who practiced it and emphasized certain things about it, but basically it is just to realize and appreciate that Jesus loves us so very much. His burning heart is a symbol of his love for us and his mercy towards us, and it is pierced with thorns because people are ungrateful and don’t appreciate all he does for us. When you pray, you are making him feel better because he knows somebody actually cares and is grateful.

You can also ask him to make your heart more like his so that you love God more and love your fellow man more.
