Question about the Trinity

Which is the better question to ask:
What is the Trinity?
or,
Who is the Trinity?

I want to have a conversation with my friends about who or what the Trinity is, and want to know which question is more appropriate to start the discussion with.

As the Bishop walked around the Church during their first Communion he asked some questions- When he asked a little girl what was the Trinity she mumbled something- he said I don’t understand- she said you’re not supposed to its a Mystery.

I would go with “who is the Trinity?” The word was coined to describe the one God in three Divine Persons. In the process of explaining the Trinity, you will probably cover what a trinity/triunity is.

To say a mystery is something you cannot understand anything about is a complete error. A mystery means you can’t understand everything about it, not that you cannot understand anything about it. I have been led astray more by people who told me that nothing can be understood about a mystery than anyone else. To believe that a mystery is something we are totally ignorant of is the worst hindrance to knowing and loving God I have ever encountered.

What is the Trinity?
The Trinity is a term to define the three persons who possess the same divinve nature; That is, they know with the same intellect and love with the same will.

Human beings each have their own nature; That is, we each know with our own intellect and we each love with our own will.

I suppose the Mystery of the Blessed Trinity could be brought up in conversation using either question.

What is the Trinity? The Trinity is the One, True God in three separate persons. God did not leave his throne in Heaven when He became baby Jesus in the womb of Mary and the same is true when God sends His Holy Spirit to us to help us here on earth.

Who is the Trinity? The one in three. God is pure spirit. Jesus is the face of God and shows us who God is and how God loves by His Words and actions, and The Holy Spirit is the love between God the Father and Jesus the Son of the Father.

Maybe someone else can explain it better. I think post #2 explained it perfectly.

Either way is fine to ask. Asking what is the Trinity is basically a question that is going to the very beginning of the conversation. It like asking ‘what is God.’. As Catholics we know God is Someone, but to be philospohical about it we can build the conversation up with elementary questions. Unless you are talking with someone petty who is playing ‘gotcha’ with every word you’re saying as if they are trying to catch you up in some error, then its fine to ask what is the Trinity in a manner of what is the teaching about the Trunity.

What is said? Who he is? Who is a word (to the best of what I can think of) that pertains to personhood. The Trinity should be spoken about in reverence. He is three persons. He is the Word, which just might be intrinsic with what and who (again, what is said? a word; yet we talk about the Word, who is He?).

I recommend a really good book called Theology For Beginners by F.J. Sheed.
Frank Sheed explains the Trinity in easy to read way.

…I find that Who is the Holy Trinity denotes respect for what you Believe… sadly, too many think that we can speak to God and about God in any term (hollowood mumbo jumbo); would you not feel disrespected if I call you an it or boy?

I’m not into words and their roots, origins or meanings… but I do find that those who reject Yahweh God tend to use derogatory terms when addressing God (ever noticed how Christian–specifically Catholics–are always depicted as irrational and hypocritical in most movies and programs?); if we, Believers, accept the world on its terms we, in effect are becoming friends with the world and, as Scriptures warns, enemies of God!
