today at dinner, in a moment of anxiety and frustration, I in my head(not outloud) thought the Lord’s name in vain followed by the other four letter word referring to some tomatoes. This is objectively mortal sin. . I am at times scrupulous and this happens very rarely but is somewhat a habit in moments of anxiety. I will mention this at my next confession. my question, according to what I have just said here, must I go to confession before recieving communion? I am asking because this is a type of issue that comes up frequently with scrupulosity.thanks.

God Bless,

Matt

Doesn’t sound like the conditions for mortal sin were met, probably.

The closer you get to Christ the more you will experience His peace through the storms, and your anxiety will wane accordingly.

Not a mortal sin. Can be confessed but not with great urgency.

I once confessed using the Lord’s name in vain (i.e. saying “oh my God”) too much. My priest told me it was a good thing to confess, but was only a venial sin, not mortal. Please correct me if he was wrong, be here is how he explained it:

In the Decalogue, the command to not take the name of God in vain meant something very specific. He said that it meant “to ask God to be a witness to a lie”, or in other words, to swear an untruth *on *the name of God. This would be a mortal sin, but lesser imprudent use of the Lord’s name such as expressions of anger or exhasperation would not be mortally sinful.

Was the priest right?
