Hello everyone,

I have a basic question, which I beleive I know the answer too, but I would like some confirmation.

Is it OK to attend the Anticipated Mass for Sunday on Saturday evening and have that count towards the First Sunday devotion?
  • Yes, just have to attend any mass on Saturday
  • No, the Sunday liturgy on Saturday evening does not count
  • Yes, however, the Sunday liturgy on Saturday evening works only if you also attend Mass on Sunday

And if you say “any mass on Saturday” would that include Weddings and Funerals?
  • Yes, it would include wedding and funeral masses
  • No, it would not.
  • Wedding Mass = yes; Funeral mass = no
  • Funeral Mass = yes; Wedding mass = no

Thank you & God bless!

Please note that the Five First Saturdays devotion does not specifically call for “Mass”. Our Lady asked for people to “receive Holy Communion” on the five Saturdays, same as Jesus did for Nine First Fridays.

Therefore, if you attend a Mass (any Mass) on the Saturday, but do not receive Communion, you’re missing an element.

Likewise, if you receive Holy Communion on the Saturday outside of a Mass, you’ve satisfied the element.

Here is a source (there are many more)

So would that mean the First Saturday devotion is impossible for those of us whose parishes don’t have non-vigil Saturday Mass?

No, based what @Tis_Bearself posted and her link (at very bottom of web page), what’s required is:
First Saturdays
in reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary include the following elements, performed with the intention of reparation for blasphemies against the Immaculate Heart, for at least five consecutive months:
  • Confession (shortly before or after the First Saturday — so long as the person receives Holy Communion in a state of grace);
  • Holy Communion received on the First Saturday of each month;
  • the Holy Rosary, five decades recited sometime during the day; and
  • meditating for 15 minutes on the Mysteries of the Rosary (one or more).

The vigil Mass is fine if you receive Holy Communion at it.

You just need to receive a Holy Communion on the Saturday.

Doesn’t matter which Mass or Catholic prayer service or other Catholic arrangement you receive it at.
