Were ear lobes with two piercings particularly common in the mid-1980s?

Yes, they were common. 2 and possibly more on the cartilage part, actually.

Yes, and to this day, I have two holes in each lobe. I balked at having anymore, since piercing in cartilage is a lot more painful.

Yep, sure were! They were a huge fad back then. And - two or more in one ear but only one in the other… I have two in my left ear to this day (only one in the right). This probably ‘marks’ me as the late 80’s teen! LOL. Most of the guys I knew, were friends with or dated also pierced their ear. Singular side, but 2 or 3 in one side was normal.

Yes, and I knew a couple girls who would only double pierce one of the lobes and wear a post earring on the “upper” hole and dangling earring on the regular holes.

there was a gal in my department that already had two pairs, and wanted a single extra hole on one side.

Since they were sold in pairs, she tried to convince me to go in with her to take the second hole.

And my girlfriend was no help, simply laughing . . .

I only ever pierced one hole in one earlobe. Some guy I had a huge crush on had only one piercing in his ear lobe so I made mine just like his. LOL.

I figured I’d always have a spare earring since they usually came in a pair and I could only wear one.

At this point it’s been so long since I wore an earring that I just had to feel my earlobes to recall which one had been pierced. And I honestly can’t feel anything so I’d likely have to poke around with a wire.

I let my ear piercings close then re opened them with another set of earrings.
Didn’t feel too good…

Yes. 3 total.

I was prohibited by my dad from getting a second piercing.

Yes although my second piercing closed. It was a fad.

Thank the Lord I’m not young enough to get gauges or a sleeve of tattos as they are fads too and I probably have gotten both.

In 10 years I plan to have a tattoo removal and
Guage saw up business.
I’ll be rich.

True story:

My dad was against pierced earrings. Didn’t like that my mom’s ears were pierced, didn’t want his daughters getting theirs pierced because (say it along with me if you know it) “ if God meant you to have holes in your ears, you would have been born with them.”

He went silent on the subject when my aunt showed me his mother’s earrings and yes, they were for pierced ears. They are over 100 years old, and belong to me now. 😁

The holes closing up have been a real problem for me. I’ve had to have mine re-pierced several times, due to their closing up. I still like to wear earrings, but I find if I don’t wear a pair every day, it isn’t long before I can’t get one or more of them in. Awhile back, the one hole that never used to close up closed. It’s a drag to have to re-open them so often.

Also, I prefer French hooks to studs or posts, and I absolutely hate the hinged type. They almost never close properly. I’ve had several pairs re-fashioned by a jeweler to replace the hinges with hooks.

I see that continuous hoops are coming back. I used to wear those, but now have trouble getting that tiny thread of a wire on one end into that impossibly narrow tube on the other end to complete the hoop. And, they tend to come undone, because often only the tip of the wire will go into the tube. They tend to be really cheaply made these days.
