Hello,

I am a speech therapy Master’s student…I’ve become interested lately in the way that people whose primary difficulty is language (aphasia, cerebral palsy in many cases, motor speech disorders) feel about the resources available for them to go to confession. The most recent directive from the USCCB says that they should be allowed to use any electronic devices that they normally use in the confessional - but having worked with this population I know how difficult it is to figure out how to program them, add the right pictures, etc…I would really like to start developing a protocol for them to use their devices (or a low tech board) more easily in these situations, if they feel the need. I’ve only seen one resource so far, and it was geared more towards kids. I would love to hear some feedback from people in these situations (or with Catholic family/friends in these cases) about whether this would be useful for them.
Please respond or PM me if this interests you 🙂

That is an excellent point…this would be for people who can’t write, which is very often the case in aphasia and other disorders of this kind. I have worked with machines where I think it would be possible. I plan for it to be similar to a general examination of conscience which would also promote more privacy.

I know some of the older talk boxes came with a catholic page that they could use for confession. I’m not sure if they are still available. It had (for lack or better words) kid like sins that they could confess. This was 8 or 9 years ago and I know most of them have been replaced by now.

Interesting! Do you know of anyone who used it for confession and how they liked it?
