Does the HHS mandate force institutions, catholic or otherwise, to pay for abortions? If so could you give me specifics? I am finding it hard to believe…

The mandate would force businesses and organizations to pay for the insurance that covers contraceptions, abortion-inducing drugs, and sterilizations. Therefore, we must financially provide for drugs that cause, among other things, abortions.

So, if passed, catholic church institutions will have to provide insurance that will cover abortion? What are the limitations in terms of how far along a woman is, in her pregnancy.

I don’t think that actual abortions are covered by the mandate - YET. However, drugs such as Plan B, which are abortifacient, are covered.

Also, under the latest proposed guidelines the dioceses themselves would be exempt, I think. However, institutions such as Catholic hospitals and colleges, which while not a part of the diocese under civil law but are deeply affiliated with the mission of the Catholic Church, would not be exempt. And, no individual business owner would be exempt.

So, for example, let’s say that I am a business owner and I object morally to things such as contraception and abortifacient drugs. I don’t want to pay for them. Where as before I could say - Susie, if you want contraceptives and drugs such as Plan B, you have to pay for it yourself - now I would be responsible for paying for Susie’s contraceptives and abortifacient drugs, or even her husbands and/or boyfriend’s Jim’s vasectomy.

It’s complicated. The federal law has a list of services it calls Essential Health Benefits. Contraception as part of prescription coverage is in that list. Elective abortion is not.

BUT, states can further define Essential Health Benefits in their own states-- what must be in the plans offered in their states. CT, for example, includes abortion, while other states such as PA have moved to exclude it.

Thanks for that info. I never realized it was so. I’ve been reading articles and stuff from the USCCB website and never remember seeing this put clearly like that. (not that I blame them; probably I didn’t read carefully enough)

Thanks for the feedback…👍

CT includes paid-for abortions A woman can receive coverage that will pay for an abortion i.e. a woman that is 1, 2 or 3 months pregnant?

how does this translate to citizens being being personally taxed for obama care ( no need to call it such a tidy name like hhs ) better yet how are catholic institutions going to oppose such an unjust law that is now being imposed upon them, or any other religious institute.

If we as citizens are going to be physically taxed for this, will it show up on our W-2s ? as other things such as social security and medicade does ?

Are clergy exempt ? and will clergy oppose paying for this if not exempt from it ?

Lastly how many generations will it probably take to undo this travesty.

🍿 Good questions that I cannot answer…

Yes. If you wind up on the insurance exchanges, your money will be used for elective abortions if your state (most of them) mandate it.

Protest! Even a few of us Lutherans joined you in the HHS protest last year. I look forward to being there again this year.

Here’s my three little Lutheran boys happily marching with their Catholic friends.

Clergy would be exempt only if all of their employment came from the church. If they are employed by any Catholic charity, they would not be exempt.
