Question for EO church

Here is a good article on the Immaculate Conception from New Advent. (Catholic source) Keep in mind again it was not formally defined by the Church until 800 years after the schism.

The ‘Immaculate Conception’ is not in response to any heresy that I am aware of.

Of course there is much heresy regarding Mary as a result of the Protestant movement.

The heresies of Modernism and rationalism-- denying the supernatural order-- began to have much influence in the late 1800s as well as ideas that spawned the atheistic regimes of the early 20th century. The Pope and Bishops believed this was the right time to solemnly define what had been beleived since ancient times.

It seemed simply to be an opportunity for the Pope to exercise his recently declared ‘authority’ of universal jurisdiction and infallibility.

This is an incorrect understanding of the development of doctrine, and a bit disengenuous to state this Catholics have “only” known this truth for 150 years.

Can you show us (from the first millenium) where the Church begins to teach that Our Lady was saved from original sin in the womb? Can you trace this “development of doctrine” from the early Church? Did the early Church Fathers clearly write of such understandings?

I apologize, should I just call you Orthodox? I guess I thought it was Eastern Orthodox So I figure maybe someone here who is Orthodox would know what that church has always believed about Mary.

Can call me Volodya, but Orthodox is how we call our Church. Orthodox prayers are usually in books called Molitvoslov - from this site I know that best one in American English is from JOrdanville Monastery. These were monks from Pochaev Monastery in Ukraina who went to America with printing press. You can order their “prayer book” at this site

Also I agree with Prodromos - development of doctrine is not Orthodox understanding.

Orthodox believe in purity and sinless of Mary but do not try to explain it by some understanding of her conception, etc. We know there are things which will not be explainable to us - Mystery. Belief in sinlessness of Mary is not the same as belief in this new-dogma Immaculate conception.

I was wondering what the EO church believes about the Marian dogma of the RCC.

Do you all believe the same about Mary or just agree with some and not others?

For the sake of clarity, could you please spell out for us the Marian dogmas? I thought there were two but I was reading about a proposed fifth dogma somewhere today, so I am unclear about all of this.

Please, no links, just a brief summary will do, and include the one or two (?..not sure) proposed new dogmas if you can.

Im not sure about any others. Im not catholic so Im not sure if I have them all.

I think the CC is talking about Mary being the co-mediatrix alongside Christ
