AnthonySorensen,

Worship has a fairly broad definition. Can you pick the definition that applies to your original post?

1: chiefly British: a person of importance —used as a title for various officials (as magistrates and some mayors)

2: reverence offered a divine being or supernatural power; also: an act of expressing such reverence

3: a form of religious practice with its creed and ritual

4: extravagant respect or admiration for or devotion to an object of esteem (worship of the dollar)

I’m not sure if you mean only atheists when you say non-Christians or if you mean other religions, or both. Anyhow, I must say the thread itself seems confrontational. And I guess I’m being confrontational as well but I felt the need to express this.
Agreed. I think the OP possibly meant those that left religion. I think the question probably could have been worded "Since you’ve walked away from God , what have you replaced God with in your life ? "

This hinges on the assumption that God fills a void nothing else can fill. Those that don’t fill it with Him, fill it with other things that temporarily satisfy but never actually satiate. I’ve seen this manifest itself in my friends that have rejected God, but I’m a believer in God so perhaps my opinion is biased 😛 .

I think it’s an interesting question for those that walked away from God that have examined it, but only if the foundation is agreed that God does indeed fill a space in us period. Then the natural follow-up question would be “Did what you filled it with give you a similar experience to when it was filled with God.”

In my opinion God fills a void in us that is otherwise unsustainable. So now the question comes: Did those that initially had religion/faith truly ever have God filling that otherwise unsustainable void or did they have some preconceived notion of what God unsustainable and found the whole idea of God as nonsense ?

Does it occur to anyone that it’s believers who have a void they are trying to fill with a non-existent god and that it’s non-believers who have no void?

I’m not trying to start a fight. I’m just reversing the question. 😉

Can we establish there is a void ?

Hmm, to answer in two formats.

A sunny day, near a waterfront (lake, river, ocean). Surrounded by my friends (who come in all shapes, sizes, and yes…creeds or lack thereof) during a good meal (barbeque, clambake, tailgate) in the midst of intense discussions about interesting topics.

On a more serious note - The Lab.

Not any particular point in time. Rather, the moment when the following occurs:

“Well, we expect the sample to react in the following manner so this should be rather rout-…wait…wait… WHAT THE HECK?!”

I would venture that the void is not inherant, instead man creates a void when he seperates himself from the rest of existance (because God & Goddess are made up of all living things).

So a christian would say we have an inherant void only god can fill, and people try to fill it with the pleasures of sin.

I would say we have created a void through our lifestyle that is mostly detached from nature. I would venture though that some people dont even notice this void so they really have no personal need to fit. really more than a void its a disconnect.

I worship Allah 5 times a day in obligatory prayers, plus optional personal intentions and various blessings/invocations during the day.
