A sad fact about Scientology is that practioners encourage you to sever links with any family who leave the “Church”.

They call it “disconnection.” They deny it’s a policy, but there’s plenty of memos and writings over the years to suggest it is, or was real, and lots of people who leave the movement claim it was encouraged. On the other hand, shunning is a practice encouraged to greater or lesser degrees by many religions.

Not directly though. As Catholics we’re not discouraged to marry non-Catholics, but we’re informed that it won’t be sacremental… they must agree to our rules… must go to RCIA… while I understand the reasoning behind all those things, they certainly discourage some people I know to not get married in a Catholic Church. The parents of one of my housemates wanted to get married in the CC - one of them was Catholic, the other was Protestant. They didn’t see why they had to jump through so many hoops so they didn’t get married there, although my housemate as a child was christened, confirmed, etc.
 
There are NON-Catholics in Ireland?! Sorry. 😛 And oh right, didn’t know that - that’s the thing I’ve learnt today then!

I saw that when it was first broadcast, it was very strange. He wanted to interview people who were followers to ask them why they believe in Scientology, what lead them to it etc - it was meant to be a typical BBC impartial documentary. But then some guys in dark shades would follow them, interupt conversations, give them pre-approved questions, and generally hassle the journalists the whole time.
 
Wow, I didn’t realise Ireland was “that” Catholic. Interesting, but my current boyfriend is an atheist, therefore my understanding is that it will not be sacramental at all. 😦
 
CBC did a documentary on them quite recently as well, they had a spokesman for the group who they were interviewing, who they’d ask questions they already knew the answer to and he’d blatently lie or pretend nothing was a big deal, people being cut off from their families was not at the instigation of the group, etc.

So true. The closest we get to “Xenu” is probably St. Xystus of Rome, a.k.a. Pope St. Sixtus. It might not be quite as cool-sounding, but let’s see Xenu’s anaphora…oh, wait, that’s right…he doesn’t have one. Pfft. Some galactic emperor you’ve got there, Scientology. :rolleyes:
