I attend an Indult Latin Mass offered by the Institute of Christ the King. As you know Holy Communion is recieved kneeling at the altar rail. When I’ve attended NO Masses, I genuflect before recieving Holy Communion. My question is this: should I be genuflecting or should I bow my head as the new guidelines say? I know no priest has the right to refuse me Holy Communion if I genuflect, but is it correct to continue doing so? What do you all do?

I don’t get the thrust of your question. If you receive communion kneeling at the altar rail, why are you concerned about genuflecting.

Just so you know, I’m just a fuddy duddy.

I’m sorry. Let me clarify. I usually attend Latin Mass(Tridentine). But on occasion I’ve gone to Novus Ordo Masses. My question pertains to what to do at the Novus Ordo masses!

While most NO attendees do bow their heads before receiving Holy Communion, there are those who prefer to genuflect. There is, as far as I know, no problem with this…Continue to do it if it is important to you…No one can stop you…

“Correct?” What does this mean in this context?

You obviously know the normative gesture is to bow, because you’re already aware that a priest cannot refuse to give you communion if you feel the need to genuflect in defiance of what the Church directs.

Can you think of anything else that will bring attention to yourself?

Personally, I follow what the Church directs and not my own ego.

Defiance? Ego? Gee, Crusader, assume much? Please forgive me if I find it difficult to go from kneeling to recieve at Holy Communion to standing and bowing my head at a Novus Ordo Mass. Does anyone else who** regularly attends** the Tridentine Mass have this issue? And how do you reconcile this?

Personally, I would be happy if people even bowed at the NO masses I attend, because almost nobody does. Same for bowing during the Creed (on the rare occasions that the priests in our parish decide to include it.)

I don’t think genuflecting is defiant either and I welcome seeing ANY act of reverence for the Eucharist.

And they try to say that Traditionalists are legalistic…geez.

I understand - as I regularly attend an Indult Mass as well but on the occasions when I attend the N. O. Mass, I try to be obedient to the rubics outlined in the GIRM. “when in Rome”, etc. You know when we have visitors to the Indult Mass, we expect them to obey the rubics outlined in the 1962 Missal - i.e. kneel for communion and receive only on the tongue.

I know it is sometimes difficult to do this but I try to remember that what the Lord loves his people to be obedient and bowing is also a sign of reverence. This is what I do before I receive and I still have choices in that I can receive on the tongue and have the option to stand, kneel or sit after I receive.

It is good that you are questioning which is the correct method so you can adhere to that when you do attend an N.O. Mass and readin RS and the GIRM can help you with this. We cannot depend on doin what others around us do because in some cases they are the reasons why the new RS instructions were issued. Think of it that way also. One reason the N.O. Masses are so full of abuse is that so many people did their own thing.
Each Mass (1962 and 1970 missals) have explicit instructions in some areas and these should be followed. The 1970 does give us some choices in some areas and we can make those choices when allowed. (i.e. we can still receive on the tongue, we can receive only one species if we wish and we can kneel after communion if that is our choice).

If we wish to have the Indult Mass, we must not make it divisive but unitive by abiding by the rules in both cases and know that regardless of our liturgical preferences, we are, above all CATHOLICS.

Thank-you for your response, deogratias. Your analogy about the rubrics for the 1962 Mass makes perfect sense. Thanks again! :clapping:
