Hi,

women only please…

I was just wondering, do women who attend the EF Mass receive the Eucharist during that time of the month? Or is this not allowed? I know in some Eastern churches it is not allowed, but in others it is, what about traditional Catholicism?

Mary’s purification when she went to the temple was a Jewish tradition, not Catholic. But of course Jews do not recieve the Eucharist.

This ritual was known as ‘churching’ by the women around here. They did not return to church after a delivery until they had been ‘churched’, many believing that they weren’t allowed to return without it. OTOH, I never heard of this ritual in the parish where I grew up. Different tradition, perhaps because here they got their religious traditions from the Ireland and we got most ours from France.

We know that in the Jewish religion, Orthodox women go for ritual purification after their menses and deliveries before they go to the synagogue. Often a new Jewish community will built the* mikveh* before a synagogue, so important is it to the life of the community.

So this natural cycle which permits us to bear life inside of us is “unclean,” eh? That’s ridiculous!

That said, I started to do Confession on a 28 day cycle coinciding with the monthlies so I could receive communion (Hormonal induced road rage, anyone? anyone?). This month for the first time I had no rage whatsoever. The graces bestowed during Confession are in fact a real thing! (And another reason why I don’t need to have a “therapy session” in the Confessional like they do in Reconciliation.)

In case you’re confused, Confession is an element of the sacrament of Reconciliation. Sorry to tell you, you went to Reconciliation without knowing it. And what you dismiss as a “therapy session” is what others call “spiritual direction” or “guidance from the priest on how to live a life in keeping with the Church’s commandments,” but feel free to show just as much disdain as you like. It might make good fodder for your next trip to Reconciliation.

In the New Rite form here, it’s no anonymous, they encourage penitants not to confess sins in number and kind, and the laundry list, but rather to have “an open dialogue with the priest to discuss the issues affecting them in their lives” and it’s a long process. Those who need that kind of spiritual direction should be making an appointment with the priest; not taking up the 30 minutes the priest gives each week/month.

I have to agree somewhat with your statement. Although both are the same sacrament regardless of what priest you go with. I do wish people would make appointments with the priest if they know they need more than just forgiveness i.e. spiritual direction or guidance. Reason? Because there are others in line and sometimes they miss our on the sacrament because that person decided to talk with the priest for about 30 minutes.

Lord love a duck!! I am 60 years old and thought I’d heard it all. I NEVER heard such a thing - of course you can go to communion while having a menstrual period as long as you are in the state of grace. Periods are no sin.

Menstral periods are beautiful and part of the life cycle. Some call that time of the month having “the curse” we were taught it is our “friend” I sure do like that better.
Who created our biology? It is private and personal and as the other write- in said is no one’s concern but your own,your husband and your physician.

I call it a curse because of the pain of my uterus feeling like it’s trying to claw its way through my abdomen. Does this have anything to do with the fall of Adam and Eve? I know that’s why childbirth is so painful.

I think any pain in general comes from the fall.
