Quick Question. This is in response to a statement made from a reader of our local news paper.

John 10:16 states:

"I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepard.

Question:

Who is being referred to as being shepard? Jesus or the Pope?
I thought it referred to Jesus. Which is it?

Thanks

Hello!

I think it is Jesus that is the ultimate Shepard…but remember the discourse between Jesus and Peter in John 21ch. 15-17…Jesus asks three times if Peter loves him (Penance for Peter’s denials) three times Peter says that he loves him and Jesus tells Peter to tend my sheep…So Jesus, being our ultimate Shepard…left Peter in charge…Peter…the Church’s first Papa

Can’t people hear Jesus’ voice through his church with the Pope as her head?

Thank you.

A Catholic reader praised an article about our new Pope, and left by quoting John 10:16.

A non-Catholic reader respoded to her letter by saying that she had a lot of homework to do if she believed John 10:16 was referring to the Pope.

He went on to say that God’s children would be better able to impact the world when other “religions” would stop basing their faith on family traditions and opinions.

He also added that some “religions” such as the Council of Trent, added the Apocrypha to the Bible. In short, he was promoting the Bible only belief, and slamming Catholics.

It is referring to Jesus, our one and only Savior/Shepard, who left the Pope in charge of his flock through St. Peter…
…and the gates of hell shall not prevail…

It sounds to me that your protestant neighbor needs to do his homework…

Thank you. Explained very well.

I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. John 10:16 (NIV)
This verse seems to support the Protestant idea of the small “c” catholic Church being the invisible communion of all believers.

First, Jesus said “there shall be one flock” made up of those who listen to his voice. That just sounds like a “communion of all believers”. It doesn’t sound like Catholicism’s picture that Catholicism is the one flock and and a bunch of sheep have jumped the fence to form other flocks.

The original question was about the shepherd, and we are all agreed that it is ultimately Jesus, guiding through human pastors, especially the pope.

The other sheep, I always thought, were the Gentiles to be brought into the one People of God, the continuation and fulfillment of God’s convenant with the Jews.

Interestingly, Mormon’s use this passage to indicate that Jesus went to preach to the native peoples of the Americas.

Note also John 21:16
He then said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
The one appointed to tend the sheep is the shepherd - If there is one shepherd, it must be Peter.
