I was out with my friends tonight for the first time in a few months, and over about 3 hours I drank 4 beers, which has never been a problem for me. However, I haven’t had that many in a few months since we’ve all been so busy. About 2 hours after my last beer it was time for me to drive home. I felt a little dizzy and very tired, and I felt like my eyes were darting a lot while I drove. I pulled off the road and parked for a few minutes to see if I was okay to drive, and after a few minutes of feeling okay I drove home. I was trying to be really careful, driving under the speed limit, etc.
I’m thinking my alcohol tolerance must have gotten lower since the last time I was out. I usually try to be mindful not to overdo it, but this time I was feeling dizzy. I’m sure part of it was tiredness but the alcohol was involved too.
Did I commit a mortal sin? I’m so conscious of how dangerous drunk driving is and I try to arrange things so I don’t have to drive when I know I’ll be drinking, but today I just didn’t expect to be that affected by it. Should I be abstaining from communion this Thursday?
