I’m wondering if 2 things are sinful. If they are silly questions then I’m sorry.

I work for a medical answering service and deal with the HIPAA law. Due to that law there are certain things that my company doesn’t alow in the operations room. That’s because they think that we could use those items to get patient information. Well… I took one of those items in so I wouldn’t be bored and fall asleep. I even encouraged a team member under me to do the same.

The other thing was that I fell asleep dueling my shift for about 30-45 minutes. I had stuff I could have done but I didn’t do it.

Would these things be sinful? I’m actually at work on a break so it might take me a bit to respond.

We are to obey just laws and just rules.

We are to be good stewards.

Sometimes when we are young it is difficult to understand that the rules DO apply to us. To not only break a rule (and it is not a case of you don’t understand why they have that rule, you understand the importance of HIPAA compliance) but encourage another is at the very least imprudent.

Tell your subordinant that you were wrong to encourage them to break the rules.

From now on, if you are bored at work find something to do. If you cannot find something that needs organized, cleaned, ask your boss “there are low volume call times on the overnight shift. Is there a project I can work on for you? Some filing, shredding, data entry? Can I inventory the supply closet?” Clean the phones and desks, go through those handsful of ink pens and throw away/recycle the ones that don’t work.

Should there be literally nothing you can do, take up knitting or get a book that teaches you a new language, do SUDOKU or crossword puzzles. Do some exercises, bring some small weights and get in a workout.

Be the most industrious employee they have ever had!

Yes, those things are sinful. I am guilty of slacking off at work sometimes, too.

Bring a rosary into the operations room instead. You can’t get patient information with a bible or a rosary… use something else that occupies your time without breaking the company policy. Even though you wouldn’t get any information illegally, you could still get in serious trouble and jeopardize your job or someone else’s job for breaking that policy.

I would be somewhat concerned that you fell asleep at work. Are you getting enough sleep?
